WASHINGTON — Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said Monday that his department will monitor Florida’s implementation of a controversial new education law that restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity to determine whether it violates federal civil rights law.
Mr. Cardona’s statement hints at potential legal ramifications for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision Monday to sign the legislation, which critics have called the “don’t say gay” bill, into law. But it does not specify what actions the Biden administration could take in response.
“By signing this bill, Governor DeSantis has chosen to target some of Florida’s most vulnerable students and families, all while under the guise of ‘parents’ rights.’ Make no mistake: this is a part of a disturbing and dangerous trend across the country of legislation targeting LGBTQI+ students, educators, and individuals,” Mr. Cardona said in a statement Monday after Mr. DeSantis signed the bill into law.
“This comes at a time when we know lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning students are three to four times more likely than non-LGBTQI+ students to report experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and even self harm — not because of who they are but because of the hostility directed at them.”
The law signed by Mr. DeSantis prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade or “in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards,” a phrase that could limit instruction for older students as well.
Mr. Cardona’s statement comes after criticism of the Florida legislation from President Joe Biden last month on the grounds that it targets LGBTQ statements. It also follows a series of increasingly bitter policy disputes between Mr. Biden and Mr. DeSantis over an array of issues . . .

Civil rights violations is under the DOJ jurisdiction.
Here is the actual text at issue from the Bill:
"Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."
This is bad legislation, but not for the reasons proclaimed by leftists and other perverts. In my opinion, the Bill does not go far enough in that it should ban all sex education in grades K - 3, and not just sexual orientation and gender identity.
I think I need to simply presume the media is lying and should probably presume just the opposite is actually true.
The presumption can be rebutted only by clear and convincing evidence to the contrary.
I think they’ve earned that honor.
It is vile that a law designed to protect innocents is proclaimed “controversial”.
If you pay attention, you’ll notice the vile propaganda arm of the vile left uses this term “controversial” exclusively for things of Conservative value. And have done so for years.
On my better days I pray for them but I don’t have many better days these days.
God can save them or damn them all to Hell this afternoon for their unrepentant wickedness.
I pray He saves the children but, for some reason, He seems to be leaving that task up to us.

IMO, "sex education" in government schools should be banned altogether. That's the parent's job.
There, fixed it for the Sexretary of Education.
My thoughts exactly.
I can simplify. You cannot teach kindergartner’s nor 1st and 2nd grader’s about buggery, anal sex, and chopping off their penis. You have to wait till 3rd grade. Isn’t that some crazy tyranny?
And Disney and teachers and the DC blob is enraged.
Normal parents don't want mentally ill "gender non-binary" freaks to have access to their 5 year old boys, in "drag queen story hour", and convince little Johnny that he's really a girl and should have his penis and testicles removed.
It doesn’t. If the bill required the outing of students to their parents or guardians even when the conditions requiring notification were not met an argument could be made it discriminated on the basis of sexual orientation or gender. Also the bill is rather limited is scope. It specifies classroom instruction. Despite all the perv posse claiming it prohibits discussion or informal questioning-it forbids neither of those. Even for younger students covered in the bill. So yes 6 year old Nancy can tell the class she has two moms. What the teacher can’t do is give a lesson where Nancy has to do a report on a family with two moms.
If I recall correctly, sex education back in the 1070’s began in 9th or 10th grade and was called “Health.” It was very cut and dry and biological without the leftist indoctrination. We were taught about ovulation, sperm, pregnancy, STDs, and puberty issues. We were also taught the difference between heterosexuals, homosexuals, transvestites, and transsexuals — not in an manner that advocated the LGBTQ lifestyle; but that a small percentage of the population has their “wires crossed.”
Reagan should have reversed Carter and disbanded the Dept. Of Ed. before it metastasized.
“This comes at a time when we know lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning students are three to four times more likely than non-LGBTQI+ students to report experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and even self harm — not because of who they are but because of the hostility directed at them.”
And is this sadness, hopelessness, etc. been widely observed in K-3rd graders?
Btw, nearly 100% of "trans" murders are sex workers.
This Biteme administration is trying to make Maduro look good.

Hey Jeff, read my reply, post # 19.
the related object lesson is that Maduro is still in power. the country is an absolute train-wreck in every category, and they still rule.
I am not sure a despotic government can be overthrown in the technological/internet age through internal means.
FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument
Non-elected federal bureaucrat Miguel Cardona of the constitutionally undefined office of Education Secretary should at least know that the only sex-related right that the states have amended the Constitution to expressly protect is limited to voting rights issues, evidenced by the 19th Amendment.
"19th Amendment:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
"From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]." —United States v. Butler, 1936.
So Mr. Cardona's politically correct promise to monitor a so-called "civil rights" crisis that he is seemingly helping the corrupt media and special interest LGBT to manufacture is actually unconstitutional interference with state sovereignty imo.
Corrections, insights welcome.
Just one more reason the Dept of Education/Indoctrination needs to be abolished yesterday.
