At one recent rally, some of Trump's supporters said Putin should have free rein, while others advocated sending in U.S. troops.

...COMMERCE, Ga. — As former President Donald Trump tries to refine his message about Russia's war against Ukraine, his base is splintered over the question of America's engagement in Eastern Europe.

"It's not our business," Peggy Bright, 57, said shortly before Trump spoke to an unusually restless and muted crowd here Saturday night...

...Alina Roberts, a Trump voter who was born in Latvia and lives in Atlanta, said at Saturday's rally that Putin cannot be stopped without direct U.S. intervention....

I disagree that the base is 'splintered', rather we are capable of having different opinions about a regional conflict barely 30 days old, which might be a foreign concept to a Dem trained to parrot one-speak.

So let me get this straight. We’re going to borrow another few trillion dollars to fight a war for years, which we will lose again anyway, like in Iraq and Afghanistan and Viet Nam.

We’ll get all the dead and wounded soldiers, whom we’ll treat like crap while Germany, France, Sweden, Norway do nothing, pay nothing, but get free health care.

Am I missing something here? God, these leaders of ours deserve raises. Oh wait...

I don’t know about conflict among public Trump supporters, but there are certainly strong feelings among FReepers. There seem to be some pretty consistent Ukraine and Putin supporters posting here. One thing I have learned as visiting a number of sites is that oil and gas resources are a very BIG ISSUE in this entire war and occupation of areas of Ukraine. See info. below.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/arielcohen/2019/02/28/as-russia-closes-in-on-crimeas-energy-resources-what-is-next-for-ukraine/?sh=6aa8dbc529cd

Wikipedia at Natural Gas in Ukraine has a very detailed technical analysis with many References. Goes into price wars, using European versus Russian gas, problems with development of their own reserves, and the Crimea and Donbas invasions aspect.

Well, I think that depends on the pro Putin people. Trump has been pretty darn clear recently that the US should do a lot more to help Ukraine, although short of sending troops.

So, I think the question is whether Putin supporters still support Trump after this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-c1Me0Kezg

As a practical matter, at least on this issue, I’d say the pro-Putin people are nearly irrelevant. While they make up a large % of FReepers and such, their arguments convince almost no one else, and given the choice of Biden vs. Trump, on this issue Trump probably picks up more support than he loses.

Note that my above answer assumes a long struggle (maybe turning into a “super Afghanistan” for Russia) in Ukraine, and Trump being able to make his case to most of the US population, including a plan to win that greatly lowers energy prices in the US.

not sure if Vlad can mount a long term war. With a grain of salt, consider this Sun article that claims that corruption up and down the ranks of the Russian military is exemplified in tanks that were ‘in storage’ and supposedly combat ready with a little dust-off, but have been stripped of their components -
on one hand by overpaid officers and on the other hand by underpaid privates - a paper army

You may be right. But every Russian I’ve met locally is anti Putin. I don’t think it’s possible to be pro Putin and pro Trump.

The Ukraine and Russia have historical ties, but not necessarily lord and serf.the ukraine has been a separate and a cojoined land.

However, since the end of the Soviet Union, all the ‘buffer states’began their search for self-autonomy apart from Russia.here lies the problem.

Russia, rather Putin, does see tbis as a means for the West, to install missile bases in thosre now fee states.

i am a trump supporter. i suport a free, ndependent and self-autonomous ukraine. i feel this conflict is a problem of Putin’s desires to ‘repatriate’ an old buffer state.

the ukraine is not NATO, yet. should we send Marines? no.
should we supply them with materiel? yes. it is their country, their future, to be decided by them.
