Why India, US don’t see eye to eye on Ukraine
Asia Times ^

An extraordinary week has passed for the Indian government’s dalliance with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. Call it a defining moment, a turning point or even an inflection point, it has elements of all three.

The past week saw a two-day visit to Delhi by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, a virtual summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and foreign-ministry-level consultations with the visiting US undersecretary for political affairs, Victoria Nuland. The leitmotif was the situation around Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has since taken a jab at India for a “somewhat shaky” stance on Ukraine. Who would have imagined that the geopolitics of Ukraine was going to shake up the Quad?

Certainly, India had a premonition. The Indian foreign-policy establishment has had no misconceptions about what began unfolding in Ukraine in the last week of February. It had spotted as far back as November-December at least, like Elijah in the Bible, a small cloud like the palm of a hand coming up from the sea.

Unlike the Indian media, academia or think tanks at large, the Indian leadership could sense that an epochal global struggle for ascendancy by the US and its Western allies versus Russia and China was breaking out in Ukraine.

Modi sensed that there would be collateral damage to India unless it saddled up to get down from the mountain, as the sky began to grow black with wind-driven clouds before the huge cloudburst of rain arrived.

I'm sure Victoria Nuland made a great impression in Delhi!

India was glad to buy the Russian oil that Brandon boycotted.

India doesn't have to take nonsense from Dementia Joe. They are going to continue to buy all the Russian oil they need for their massive 1.4 billion people.
Biden is in a very weak position after stifling American oil and gas production.
Its great to see Biden hoisted on his own petard.

The author writes of Biden doing this or not realizing that. My impression is no one person is piloting the ship of state. It is careening its way from one glancing collision to another. We can only pray others keep out of our way until a competent pilot can get to the bridge.

What is relevant is that the Uniparty supported sanctions on Russia which will be a total fail while harming the US economy.

That tells you all you need to know about American “democracy”.

At least the Indian government cares about their population.

It seems that the US and Western Europe are the only governments in the world that plot 24/7 new ways to ^%$# over their citizens.

Are there any friends of the U.S. that Joektato isn’t going to piss off?

Probably because Indian politicians haven’t been getting rich laundering money through Ukraine like US politicians.

India supported the Soviets in the Cold War, even supporting the shutdown of flight 007. They have a bug up their butt due to their experience with colonialism. Too many different peoples. We should ‘waver’ in their conflict with the Chicoms.

My impression is no one person is piloting the ship of state.

My impression is that Victoria Nuland, Tony Blinken and Jake Sullivan are running things and Biden is just a front man for them at this point.

So the government is being run by holdovers from the Obama national security team. I'd not be surprised if they are consulting with Hilary, at least in Nuland's case.

They are making foreign financial policy decisions that probably appall others in the Cabinet, such as Yellen. Yellen made a statement that she didn't see a need to sanction China yesterday. Note that she did so while the others were out of the country.

Russian retaliation for US ,”sanctions” are doing great harm to American consumers at all levels, even as the super corrupt, well fed Dementia Joe cabinet members dismiss any such concerns and blather on about non existent “green energy”.

They aren’t the only one’s. Russia still has 50% plus of the world to do business with. So the US/Biden regime wants to play chess with actual chess players, some of the best in the world. Europe will be hurt the worst.

…the big-power struggle in faraway Europe, precipitated by the Biden administration for geopolitical purposes to isolate and weaken Russia…

People make fun of Biden but you have to give him credit for manipulating Putin into massing troops on the border of Ukraine for months and then invading.

I’m sure Vlad feels bad now but Biden tricked him into it.

Right. India is going to do what’s best for India. That will cause the children currently occupying the White House to pout. Too bad.
