How many officers can you fire/arrest and still have an army?
The army never revolted in WWII and Stalin conducted purges right on the front lines. Of course ideology made some of that possible. People were true believers in the Revolution and were willing to quietly sacrifice themselves for the good of the Party. That kind of religious conviction is not in play now so the army might revolt, but it would take officers the troops actually trusted, especially NCOs to pull it off.
Stalin came close to answering that question in the late 30s; his military purge sent many capable officers to the gulag (and/or the grave) and left the Red Army with political hacks and toadies who were loyal party members, but militarily incompetent. A major reason Hitler almost defeated the Russians in 1941.

Ask Joe Stalin. He killed a bunch between the Winter War with Finland and the start of WW2. That was one reason the Germans did as well as they did at the start of Barbarossa, all the Russian generals had been purged.
Obama took out over 400 military officers to advance his wokester’s.
