Dr. Aletha Maybank joined the American Medical Association as its first chief health equity officer in 2019, determined to fight racial disparities in medicine.
That work grew more urgent in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic exposed deadly inequities in health care, and as George Floyd’s murder turned the country’s attention to the pervasiveness of systemic racism. The AMA issued a statement decrying racism as an urgent threat to public health, and Maybank focused on the organization’s efforts to “dismantle racist and discriminatory policies and practices across all of health care.” That included supporting training for medical workers on implicit bias, as well as advocating for solutions to problems that had not traditionally been a focus for the organization, such as housing inequities and police violence.
But by the fall of 2021, these equity initiatives were facing growing pushback from pundits, think-tank researchers and doctors — both liberal and conservative — who contended that the medical organization had overstepped its mission of supporting health care professionals and was now embracing a “woke” ideology. And out of public view, that backlash was turning vicious.
Over the past two years, the medical establishment has placed an unprecedented focus on addressing the barriers to medical care, and the poor health outcomes that people of color frequently face, according to Maybank and a dozen other doctors and academics who are doing this work. But these medical professionals, researchers and advocates have also experienced unprecedented pushback, ranging from lawsuits and attacks on cable news to harassment and death threats.
The barrage of criticism is the latest extension of the national furor over the teaching of racial history and the role of racism in American society, sometimes simplistically summed up as “critical race theory,” which has forced educators out of their jobs and overwhelmed school boards.

Racial disparities? Hair discrimination? Bad to absurd to insane.
they are just making this crap up out of thin air in order to reignite racial tensions that have been almost nearly resolved over the last few decades- since they can’t cite any legit examples of actual racism they are now making crap up- they are desperate to keep stoking more racism
“Maybank said she arrived home to discover someone had spray-painted a vulgar death threat on her front door in New York.” Couldn’t she have been a little more original?
Exactly.
What a ridiculous headline and article. Trying to create sympathy for the latest entity the Left is trying to hijack to push a political and social agenda vs. what it is supposed to be for. The healthcare sector is supposed to provide healthcare - not push a political and ideological agenda. No one is being “threatened” for providing healthcare to minorities as this article wants the reader to infer.
How about reverse “Racial Disparities” ? Medical Schools at the University of Illinois, U of Chicago, Northwestern, etc. put Male White Medical school applicants at the bottom of the list.
<< the pervasiveness of systemic racism. >>
A complete fiction, like countless others the Left invents to consolidate their power.
<< systemic racism >>
“Systems” cannot be racist. Individuals (people) are racists. Specifically democrats. Jim Crow advocates, KKK members, JFK, Robert Byrd, George Wallace, Joe Biden, etc.
determined to fight racial disparities in medicine = jousting at windmills
Get a real job lady.
Consider the source.
Then trash the trash.
Remember, if liberal journalists had more intelligence, they could be studies graduates.
White nationalist gangs are running around NYC spray painting “vulgar death threats”.
Omg—you can’t make up this stuff.
“White nationalists” fled NYC decades ago....
Jussie?
Why do “health disparities by racial demographics” equal “racial disparities that must be addressed” or some form of racism? There are so many other factors that come into play.
Covid killed those with underlying health issues such as obesity diabetes heart disease and other lung issues. Many were not Caucasian. That what results from eating poor diet and not going to see a doc
there’s a lot of power in victimhood
No one objects to teaching history of slavery. But as the saying goes, “You’re entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts”.
“The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination.’-Ibrahim X Kendi. (These racist grifters charge big bucks for these lies. Kendi made nearly $550/minute at UVA event).
FTA: addressing the barriers to medical care, and the poor health outcomes that people of color frequently face....
You go to a doctor and get medicine. It is that simple.
It is the gov’t people who throw up barriers that make healthcare much more expensive for everyone. Doctors are not even independent now but most have to join some large conglomerate that mandates what care you can give and what cost so the ceo can get $50 million salary plus a bonus. See the chinese virus scandal where gov’t blocked the needed medicine and 100’s of thousands of people died and are crippled just so the hospitals could charge more then a few pills could have cured.
A whole industry depends on “being determined to fight racial disparities” where none exist. Nice work for those who jump on that gravy train.
I’ve noticed once someone gains entry to the DEI world, after that it’s only a matter of moving ever upward to bigger institutions for higher salary and benefits.
