Russian troops have launched an attack on a theatre in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol where as many as 1,200 civilians including women, children and the elderly, were taking refuge.

Around lunchtime on March 16, it was reported that nationalists from the UAF Azov battalion were preparing a provocation in the building of the Drama Theater in Mariupol. According to a one of the deserted members of Azov, Ukrainian militants established the headquarter in the basement of the Mariupol Drama Theater, and the theater hall was full of civilians, who were guarded by 12 Azov militants, so that they would not run away. The building should be blown up, and horrific images with numerous civilian casualties should be provided to the Western media, accusing Russia of an airstrike.
Later, by the evening of March 16, the reports were confirmed. Reports that the Russian army had allegedly struck at the Mariupol Drama Theater was spread in Ukrainian social media. There were about 1,000 civilians inside. The Ukrainian version was immediately picked up by the US media.

Refugees from Mariupol confirm that the Drama Theater was blown up by Azov fighters. A woman who evacuated with her children from Mariupol reported that neo-Nazis blew up thee Drama Theater before they retreated.
“Leaving, they smashed the Drama Theater, just leaving, simply, people were brought to us with shrapnel wounds, and that’s it,” a local resident said.

Which side to believe? Southfront reported rumors of the herding of human shields (as a preparation for a deliberate atrocity) in the Azovstal region about a week ago.
I will have to find the link. But I read the 'rumor' article back then - and now it looks like they were correct. This looks like a deliberate 'human mine' atrocity.

Not last week as I mis-remembered, but way back on the 2nd March, the National Guard of Ukraine was reported as preparing a mass provocation with the death of civilians in the city of Mariupol
The Drama theatre was not mentioned in this article, but multiple atrocities were apparently being prepared.

I appreciate your reply- we may view the mess in Ukraine in different ways but it’s refreshing to do so without insults!
I worry when I see knee-jerk reactions as well- although I have them, too. But as I’ve aged, I’ve learned that’s just emotion- I wait for it to simmer down and then work toward facts. What’s worrisome is our refusal to see the whole picture rather than our emotional preference. I did that with covid at first- terrified, settled into caution and skepticism- still not vaccinated!
Putin is a fascinating character, no doubt. I had respect for him and know some of his background. I may have misjudged him- while I knew he had the capacity for this- I doubted he’d act on it. Clearly, Ukraine has awful, corrupt leadership, and they may well have done horrible things to people in the east/south. My view is none of that can justify what Putin has done. I’ve read views opposing mine, and while some may have merit, they still don’t overcome my belief that Putin has made a grave error.
It remains to be seen if any leaders anywhere will be able to diffuse this- I think the world is in a precarious moment. The idea that Putin, Biden and Zalensky are IT, makes my stomach churn.

There is great harm being done to the MAGA movement by Putinists at the moment because they make us all look like fringe crazies because average GOP voters are repulsed by Putinist Russia and its campaign of mass murder in Ukraine. This love affair with Putin will translate into electoral losses for MAGA candidates going forward if it continues.
You should probably LEAD with that disclaimer.

But for a Russian army that wants to pressure the Ukrainian government, and doesn’t want to engage in urban combat in Kyiv...killing civilians is one way to perhaps make that happen.
There is indeed already a pressure campaign from Russia and its allies for Ukraine to surrender to “stop the suffering.” It will no doubt get more intense as countries like Germany head into recession.
