...Already nearly 15,000 people have been detained in Russia for participating in demonstrations against the war. What future awaits these brave citizens, as well as Ukrainians captured in the occupied territories?
Since its occupation of Crimea in 2014, Russia has escalated the punishments for people exercising their right to freedom of speech and assembly. The most recent manifestation of the clampdown on civil rights is the law rushed on to the statute books to punish citizens spreading “fake news” about the military, with custodial sentences of three and a half to fifteen years. Marina Ovsyannikova, who held up an anti-war poster during a news broadcast on Russian state TV Channel One on Monday, may be among the first to fall under the new law.
...The custodial sentences handed out to people opposing the war will not be served in typical western-style cellular prisons, but in “correctional colonies” (ispravitel’nie kolonii). These house prisoners in barracks-like accommodation blocks, which were originally introduced to manage the millions of forced labourers who passed through Stalin’s Gulag.
...In a chilling article a few days ago in RIA Novosti, Russia’s domestic news agency, we learned that Ukrainians resisting the invasion are supposedly suffering from a generalised case of Stockholm syndrome; and that after liberation, “a whole complex of measures will be required to bring this mentally unhealthy population to their senses”. The fear must be that Russia will revert to measures gestated in the Gulag to correct those who are judged too slow in coming to their senses.

Remember the Russian people are also being attacked by Putin
"The next 10 generations won't be able to clean themselves from the shame of this fratricidal war."
In the old days she would be a weather reporter from Siberia for the rest of her life. Which could be no long.
Yeah - these same “journalists” are completely quiet as Tim Pool is Swatted for a SIXTH time in 2 months.
Nor did they care as Trump supporters are politically imprisoned and punished.
These are just crocodile tears.
No different than some left wing psycho in the USA interrupting a broadcast. I’m not impressed by leftists, I don’t heed leftists.
Oh yeah, look at her.. she is so brave! Crap on that.
What exactly has Marina, a Russian TV producer, got to do with Tim Pool?
She is brave to oppose Putin.
Why are you supporting Putin?
She a well known opposition figure there. The big part of her sign was in English. Within minutes of the event fully developed stories including her identity appeared throughout the MSM, including a NYT story.
Probably just a coincidence.
Oh, you joined on February 22, 2022.
How is the weather in Moscow? Long queues at the shops?
Stop working for Putin and think of how he is destroying your country, Russia
It is also clear that she does not want Russia tainted by Putin’s war.
Furthermore, where did you get that she is a well known opposition figure??!?
She works in the Kremlin state media.
It’s called oppression.
Oh, I’m sorry - I thought you cared about that and weren’t just virtue signaling about leftist causes?
Every protest everywhere in the world has some English language signs. Did you know that English is the most widely spoken language in the world?
“Baby Food Factory”
Oh - she’s “Kremlin State Media”
That makes all the difference?
What play do you think you’re watching?

Russian court has fined Marina Ovsyannikova 30,000 roubles (£215) for violating protest laws after she broke onto a live news broadcast on Channel One in an extraordinary demonstration against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
I see her as Russia’s Jane Fonda. To the gulag with her and as soon as possible! No good Russian hippie freak!
She must be a commie if the Guardian has an interest in highlighting her. The Guardian is in enemy occupied territory as far as conservatives are concerned. Fair dinkum ones that is
