After Ukraine, Could Central Asia Be Next?
Ukraine and Russia’s western flank is the first step of an attempt to restore a Russian Empire. Kazakhstan and its Central Asian neighbors look set to come next.
The world’s attention is understandably fixed on Ukraine right now and its remarkable defensive effort, led by a democratic champion in Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But we must also consider the bigger picture. It is not just Ukraine that now finds itself at an existential crossroads vis-à-vis Putin’s Russia.
Central Asia, a vast and frequently misunderstood region stretching from the Caspian Sea to China, was long subjugated by Imperial Russia, and then the Soviet Union. Its largest country, Kazakhstan, only achieved its independence thirty years ago. In its short lifespan as an independent nation, Kazakhstan has navigated a delicate diplomatic tightrope, balancing the interests of a rising China, a revanchist Russia, and a sporadic West. Often described as a “multi-vector approach,” Kazakhstan was remarkably adept at profiting from these multidirectional ties to accelerate its development, and guarantee its own security and sovereignty.

“Ukraine and Russia’s western flank is the first step of an attempt to restore a Russian Empire.”
...and I’m supposed to believe an author named “Merkel”?
The coup attempt in Central Asia happened a few months back and was put down.
I say we draw a red line at Tibet. Tibet should remain a free democracy.. . . and join NATO.
I truly doubt it because I have heard Russia lost. So why even talk about what isn’t going to happen?
After Ukraine, Putin will have to take out car title loans on every T-72 in inventory to pay for it.
Is there something I don’t know about regarding David Merkel, except that he shares his last name with Angela Merkel.
The “stans” have been mostly a broad swath of steppe seldom heard from or thought about by the mainstream media. Other than Pakistan, It is as if a sizable portion of the Earth’s surface is invisible. The West has largely ignored them, to its detriment.
What’s this ‘misunderstood’ crap. It’s comprised of zillions of eager head choppers. The CiA should think twice before stirring the hornets nest out of spite for Russkies. It will only come back to haunt them. They are just waiting for a Turkic bin Laden
I don’t know about Asia, but Russia will team up with Iran and attack Israel.
Not that I know of, but he’s tarnished in my book. After what Angela did to Germany, I have no trust in anyone sharing that name.
“I don’t know about Asia, but Russia will team up with Iran and attack Israel.”
Why? There are 2 million Russians in Israel, and Russians, unlike the US, value their citizens wherever they are (such as when they’re under attack in Ukraine).
Sure Vlad, go ahead and roll the dice in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and Mongolia.
It may be a long term bet, but I know who I would put my money on.
Some rulers of those states are already Yanokovich-like figures. They are more or less under Russia sphere now. Putin could have taken them easily. Now that his troops are bleeding heavily in Ukraine, it may be delayed.
Putins going after all the sh$tstans in Asia. Question is will China and India put up a fuss?
It’s time to dismantle Russia and China.
We need to dismantle our own totalitarians who are one in the same.
It doesn’t matter what happens when we ourselves are living under an unelected and illegitimate government implementing totalitarianism.
Erdogan has pretensions but he is a bit long in the tooth by the time they get agitated.
Russians came in and put out the fire.
