Kevin McCarthy, the Republican House minority leader, said something cynical and transparently dishonest the other day. To be fair, that’s sort of an evergreen remark; you could have said the same thing about him just about any week over the past few years. But this particular statement seemed important, because it involved a lie that has a direct bearing on how America will respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Here’s what McCarthy tweeted: “These are not Putin gas prices. They are President Biden gas prices.”
Now, that’s just false. You can argue about how much responsibility Biden’s policies bear for inflation in other parts of the economy, but the rising price of gasoline reflects the rising world price of crude oil, which hasn’t been significantly affected by anything Biden has done. And soaring crude prices have caused prices at the pump to surge in nations around the world, indeed by roughly the same amount. That is, these really are Putin gas prices.

There is a loon born every minute...
The age of pedantic a-holes is a tiring one.
Bring back President Trump’s policies?
Stopped reading at PAUL KRUGMAN
Even if you assume it was the Ukraine war that triggered the increase in oil prices, there is still the inconvenient fact that Biden’s botched pull out from Afghanistan was what baited Putin into invading Ukraine.
Just flat-out lying by the NY Times. Some of the increase was due to Ukraine, but most happened prior, probably due to a combination of Biden’s policies and the world coming back on-line.
Also, what we can do alone to keep prices from getting too high is limited, since oil is traded on a global basis, so even if we crank up somewhat, the benefit of price decrease will be spread around the world, and not concentrated in the US. But what will be concentrated are the JOBS and balance of payments, we benefit directly from that.
Gaslighting is the primary weapon Paul Krugman has in his arsenal right now. Not that it is potent, but because he cannot muster even a few grains of credibility. Every bit of this can be laid at the doorstep of Joe Biden and his clueless manner of “managing” crises as they arise, which is pretty much like throwing gasoline on the fire.
Krugman knows all about being dishonest.
wow.. did he at least pass 9th grade Economics?
New York Times ?
Paul Krugman ?
You’d have to be a mental patient to buy this stupidity.
Find someone wealthy, and steak their wealth, is that his advice Obviously I didn’t read what Krudman wrote, as I’m sure it’s useless as usual. 😋
Pretty simple. Have a Biden recession instead. That’s how you do it.
And primarily Biden pulled a bg chunk of American oil prodduction OFF-line.
They're calling this old guy "soyJack" on Twitter.
