Germany plans to buy up to 35 US-made F-35 fighter jets and 15 Eurofighter jets, a parliamentary source said Monday, as part of a major push to modernise the armed forces in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The F-35 jets made by Lockheed Martin would replace Germany's decades-old Tornado fleet, according to media reports confirmed by the source.
Tornados are the only Luftwaffe planes capable of carrying US nuclear bombs stationed in Germany that are a key part of NATO deterrence.

No, we expected all of the NATO nations to put at least 2% of what I recall was their GDP into their military. On top of that, the US shouldn’t have people stationed in the EU, according to President Eisenhower, or “we failed.”
Germany is adding over $115 billion dollars just to get to one year’s worth of it’s 2% goal. Think of all the prior loss years that didn’t get that spend.
You have a poor understanding of the situation.
Of course, all those Fokkers were actually Messerschmidts.
My Grandfather was a lifer, WWII and Korea (a tin can man primarily, though shore-based in Japan for several years after the war), and held a very different view.
He was fond of Kipling, and I’d invite you to read through and then reflect upon “White Man’s Burden.”
A little more off topic, but easier to find, “The Gods of the Copybook Headings” can be found on my home page.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
Thanks...
...because that worked out so well the last time we tried it.
Lufftwaffe means Air Weapon in German just like Panzer means Armor
So unless they change the language.. that what it’s going to be called
I’m still stunned at how quickly they’ve adopted an adult attitude after 60 years of acting like petulant children.
OK, if they want modern fighters, then by all means sell them as many F-35s as they want.
Thank you all for your replies :)
No. Luftwaffe just means Air Force.
Their navy (pitiful though it is) is still called the Kriegsmarine. That’s the word for Navy.
We have been screaming for about 40 years for the Germans to get serious and spend more on their defense....trying to tell them they had to act like grown ups if they wanted to have influence and be considered a serious country.
They scoffed and acted like protest marches and stiffly worded letters would be an effective deterrent.
That was classic and absolutely typical of what most Germans thought and how they acted. What radical, outrageous, crazy thing was Trump telling them? That maybe, just maybe making themselves almost completely dependent on Russia for their energy was not a smart thing to do. Maybe they ought to think about diversifying their energy sources.
Crazy stuff. No wonder they acted like smug little 3rd graders when told that.
What a ridiculous statement. So we’d occupy Germany for how long... forever? And do what? Teach them English and ban Oktoberfest and Lederhosen?
time to buy Lockheed Martin stock
If we had a media someone would track them down to see what they think now. Boy I wish we had a media.
Heer still means “Army.”
Wehr is also a term for “Army” as in Reichswehr, then Wehrmacht, now Bundeswehr (federal army).
Not every term used under the Nazi regime was a specifically Nazi term. Plenty of them were just German terms used both before and after the Nazi regime.
And based on the performance of the Russian Air Force this time around the F35 should dominate the airspace if it comes to a Russia-Germany engagement

F-35s are bomb trucks and not air superiority fighters - Russia’s SU-30SM & SU-35 would wipe the floor with them in a huge turkey shoot. With only frontal ‘stealth’, 4 missiles internal, and 216 cannon rounds, F-35s could defend to a degree, but not go hunting with any success. Besides, its replacing the German’s Tornado bomb truck, in any case.
If they need more air superiority fighters besides their Typhoons, then the latest F-16 variant would be a contender. The big factor is who has the most flying time.
Not good that the Germans are arming...there’s a history there that is going to be repeated.
I’ve read that the typical Russian pilot gets about 1/3 the stick time of comparable US ones. If true, those boys are gonna struggle.
The overall military has a different name: the FRG’s Bundeswehr rather than the Third Reich’s Wehrmacht. Two of the three branches have the same name as WW2: Heer (Army) and Luftwaffe (Air Force). The Germany Navy is now just Marine rather than Kriegsmarine.
