WASHINGTON - A U.S. official said Russia asked China for military equipment to use in its invasion of Ukraine, a request that heightened tensions about the ongoing war ahead of a Monday meeting in Rome between top aides for the U.S. and Chinese governments.
In advance of the talks, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan bluntly warned China to avoid helping Russia evade punishment from global sanctions that have hammered the Russian economy. "We will not allow that to go forward," he said.
The prospect of China offering Russia financial help is one of several concerns for President Joe Biden. A U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said that in recent days, Russia had requested support from China, including military equipment, to press forward in its ongoing war with Ukraine. The official did not provide details on the scope of the request. The request was first reported by the Financial Times and The Washington Post.
The Biden administration is also accusing China of spreading Russian disinformation that could be a pretext for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces to attack Ukraine with chemical or biological weapons.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has put China in a delicate spot with two of its biggest trading partners: the U.S. and European Union. China needs access to those markets, yet it also has shown support for Moscow, joining with Russia in declaring a friendship with "no limits."
In his talks with senior Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi, Sullivan will indeed be looking for limits in what Beijing will do for Moscow.
"I’m not going to sit here publicly and brandish threats," he told CNN in a round of Sunday news show interviews.

The US government puts out the propaganda and the media dutifully echos it non stop. Until we get a truthful media, believe nothing they say.
I believe the Russians asked China for help. It’s consistent with OSINT coming out of both China and Russia.
So far, though, it is just talk.
RE: I believe the Russians asked China for help.
Why would Russia need China’s military help? They’re the ones invading, not the ones being invaded.
I believe they would do it just as a diplomatic tit for tat on NATO resupplying the Ukrainian forces, to throw another log on the fire so to speak.
Doesn’t mean China will actually do it, but I guarantee without knowing the answer that China is going to come out on the record as saying if Russia asks for aid then China will gladly support them.
China will not back NATO, so having the Dragon even appear to be behind the Bear will give Putin more leverage, which will be a push against us (Biden).
Well, we all have opinions based on experience and history, but no one is free from the absolute flood of daily propaganda from both sides. Given the seriousness of the times we’re in if anonymous aren’t willing to lend their name to a leak, I’m ignoring it.
Interesting. Since Russia is losing so badly Poland should send the jets to them. I mean how else or these morons gonna keep this war going.
RE: Interesting. Since Russia is losing so badly Poland should send the jets to them
1. We don’t know that Russia is losing. The invasion might not be going as smoothly as planned, but without NATO or US involvement, it’s just a matter of time before they take Ukraine ( with much blood spilled on both sides ).
2. We also do not know if this report of them seeking China’s military aid is true.
Fake news from the Empire of Lies
RE: Fake news from the Empire of Lies
The USA accuses and China denies. Which is the Empire of Lies and which one is more believable?
“1. We don’t know that Russia is losing. The invasion might not be going as smoothly as planned, but without NATO or US involvement, it’s just a matter of time before they take Ukraine ( with much blood spilled on both sides ).”
The longer the war goes on, the more likely it will morph into non-traditional war for decades. The Russians may have already lost if you look at the long term. They might be able to ‘take’ Ukraine but never hold it. Likely there will be ‘blowback’ for decades. Basically, it’s a mess for both nations now.
2. We also do not know if this report of them seeking China’s military aid is true.
China will probably ship the Russians weapons, or at least sell them outright. They should be careful NOT to get involved physically, because it will risk isolating them as well. China wins the most by selling weapons and controlling the banks. Expect China to do what’s best for
China.

I’m surprised they haven’t approached the Taliban. They have billions of dollars worth of military hardware that Xiden left behind in August and are in dire need of hard currency.
The best outcome for "Hiho, hiho" Putin (and it isn't great) is a pyrrhic victory, humiliated by people fighting for their lives and what's left of their homes against a KGB thug and gangster. Pooty-Poot's pattern is to jump into something without any clear out plan, as he did in Syria and again in Libya. There is no upside to his latest invasion of Ukraine, and his begging for help is a further humiliation.
OSINT = Open-source intelligence
Open-source intelligence is the collection and analysis of data gathered from open sources to produce actionable intelligence. OSINT is primarily used in national security, law enforcement, and business intelligence functions and is of value to analysts who use non-sensitive intelligence in answering classified, unclassified, or proprietary intelligence requirements across the previous intelligence disciplines. Escalation through other means
Russia is running low on missiles and precision munitions. Since China has copied many Russian designs, Russia seems to assume that Chinese models are similar enough to be readily usable by Russian operators. This seems unlikely. Notably, the request also reveals that Russia’s arms industry is so decrepit and constrained that it cannot produce enough to meet the requirements of the Ukraine war.
