Anti-Trump Republicans Lining Up for 2024 Shadow Primary

NEW YORK (AP) — Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is planning trips to Iowa and New Hampshire. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., is considering a rough timeline for a potential presidential announcement. And allies of Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., are openly talking up her White House prospects.

More than two years before the next presidential election, a shadow primary is already beginning to take shape among at least three fierce Republican critics of former President Donald Trump to determine who is best positioned to occupy the anti-Trump lane in 2024.

Their apparent willingness to run — even if Trump does, as is widely expected — represents a shift from previous years when “Never Trump” operatives failed to recruit any GOP officeholders to challenge the incumbent president. But with the 2024 contest almost in view, the question is no longer whether one of Trump’s prominent Republican critics will run, but how many will mount a campaign and how soon they will announce.

Those close to Cheney, Hogan and Kinzinger expect one of them, if not more, to launch a presidential bid after the 2022 midterms. While all three are nationally known to some degree, their goal would not necessarily be to win the presidency. Above all, they want to hinder Trump’s return to the White House, at least compared with 2020, when his allies cleared the field of any Republican opponents and persuaded some states to cancel primary contests altogether.

Usual nonsense and propaganda from AP? Yup.
Larry Hogan huh?
He’d be lucky to win even 1% of the vote in any Republican Presidential primary.
He’s better off running as a Democrat.

IMO, if you add up all the votes for the 3 idiots mentioned, I’d be surprised if it reached more than 2-3%.

What does it say about a candidate when the article says the goal may not be to win the Presidency but to hinder Trump.

Actually in doing so, they are likely falling right into Trump's trap. Trump runs best when he's running as an outsider, against the "establishment swamp", like he did in 2016"

I'm also a bit surprised the "establishment" hasn't settled on a single "trump destroyer" candidate and started pumping tons of money into them and putting them on every news show. Admittedly they don't really have a very deep bench and nobody near a prominent as Trump. But I really had expected them to have already picked someone like Nikki Haley as their 2024 candidate and pushed everybody else out. They really risk splitting the anti-Trump vote several ways with every establishment candidate and his brother jumping into the race.

Admittedly, it's a bit early as the midterms haven't even occurred yet, so it may still happen.

Mitt has been popping off a lot, lately. He’s going to run.
Ann Coulter would be deeply saddened, if Cheney, or Kinzinger put the squeeze on him.

And that they are publicly saying it. It makes the whole party look bad—untrustworthy and unorganized.

“Hogan . . . He’s better off running as a Democrat.”

Why not? He’s a moderate democrat that has run as a republican several times already.

That’s all we need, Mr. Pierre Delecto Sanctimony to run.

Typical.

Establishment Republicans fight other Republicans harder than they fight the opposition.

Case-in-point: Carpetbagger Cheney sits on the House January 6 committee, by invitation of the Dems, thus showing where her true loyalities reside.

Hogan, Kinziger and Cheney (they left out the other fat narcissist, Christie)—it is laughable as well as insulting to the average conservatives’ intelligence. They haven’t a snowball’s chance in hell; they have only their egos for loyal support.
