War in Ukraine: Uni to uniform - Ukraine's new teenage army recruits
BBC ^ | March 13, 2022 | Jeremy Bowen

Just over a week ago I met a group of young men who had volunteered at a centre in Kyiv to fight for Ukraine.

Most of them were in their late teens, not long out of school. They told me that after three days' basic training they would head for the front line - or very close to it.

Some of them were wearing knee pads that looked too small, as if they had come with skateboards on their 12th birthdays. A few had sleeping bags. One had a yoga mat. When they waited outside for the bus that was going to be taking them to the training base, they looked like friends on the way to a festival - apart from the guns. Each had been given custody of a Kalashnikov assault rifle.

They look more like conscripts.

My old man lied about his age and was 17 when he joined the army. And not a bbc reporter around to pay him homage. Zelensky should take a deal and let these youngsters have a future. Instead of cannon fodder

This is what it looks like when "Russia is losing".

That’s a very sad photo.

I saw a very early report that said that many of the initial wave of refugees were actually young men fleeing conscription.

Nobody wants this war except Zelensky and Biden. (It’s not popular in Russia, either.)

Seriously?

Those Hitlerjugend kids were 10, 11, and 12. An occasional grizzled veteran was 15.

These kids are "in their late teens, just out of school," per the article. Every government on earth drafts 17- and 18-yo boys when they need them. I'm old enough to remember when 18 year old American boys without a plan ended up in a jungle in southeast Asia, courtesy of something called a "draft". My brother dropped out of college after his freshman year, and immediately enlisted in the Navy, because he didn't want to be on the ground in 'Nam. He was "in his late teens, just out of school".

Three days of basic training? We are being told Russia is losing badly then Ukraine’s president tries to have NATO establish a no fly zone and sends young people to war without adequate training. So which side is winning?

So what’s new. I joined the US Navy Reserve at 16 with my parental permission. Active duty at 17. Vietnam and out before I turned 21 as a PO2. Later ten more years in Naval Reserve Seabees.

A know an old man, he was a brownshirt youth pilot at the end of ww2, plane shot down,
Russia on one side, Americans on the other, he ran to the American side and was released when the war was over.

He immediately started one of the world’s largest construction companies rebuilding Germany, owns farms , in the East coast these days by his children..its rumored they had French art stashed to sell to get started in Europe, we will never know..

They look like the usual teenagers showing up for military service. Amazing what a haircut and uniform issue can do.

Yes, but this thread is the property of the Putin Brigade.

I enlisted in the Army National Guard at 17, left for basic three days after graduation from high school, at 18, OCS at 20, mandatory retirement at 49. When I got on the train leaving Madison, Wisconsin, for basic, I went with a group from my battalion, and we didn’t look much different than these kids, except for the yoga mats and Kalashnikovs.

First crack of a bullet past their head and they will run home to momma. Lots of cheap AKs for sale. Never fired and only dropped once.

...young men fleeing conscription.

They were doing that under the Czar, too. Oh, and then hanging 10 Jews a day in St Petersburg as a distraction and to whip up a pogrom.

Evidently, there is a limited playbook for authoritarian rulers.

A grandfather left in 1910 for both those reasons.
