Alcohol Detection Sensors Could Be The Next Big Controversial Safety Feature Required In Every New Car. The government is working on laws that would require new cars to be equipped with breath or touch sensors that can detect when a driver is impaired by alcohol. In order to make roadways safer, the technology would render a car undrivable if a blood alcohol level of more than .08 % is detected. The development is already started.

In 2019, more than 10,000 people died in collisions involving an alcohol-impaired driver, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. According to the report, this accounts for nearly 30% of all road deaths. To that purpose, it's collaborating with a group of automakers to build the above-mentioned safety gadget.

The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety program is the name given to the collaboration between the automakers, and it is working on a number of potential solutions. Breath analyzers and infrared touch sensors are both being considered for future production automobiles. If testing yields an illegal B.A.C. (blood alcohol level), each of them would be able to disable the car.

Even if some exploits are made, this will undoubtedly reduce the number of drunk driving incidents, accidents, and arrests across the country. Schneider, a truck safety technology business, aims to conduct testing for the current DADDS in-vehicle alcohol detection system later this year.

The new technology must "passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately detect whether the driver may be impaired," according to the NHTSA's exact phrasing. When compared to a breathalyzer, touch sensors would be far less intrusive.

Those who believe this is overly intrusive have expressed their unhappiness. From the viewpoint of a car enthusiast, it seems self-evident that keeping impaired people off the road is only a positive thing. Of course, no technology works 100 percent of the time, so even the soberest of people might occasionally find up with a paperweight instead of an automobile.

The technology might be mandated in all new cars as early as 2026, and it's only one of many new technologies the NHTSA is examining for future demands. Another option is intelligent speed aid, which sounds far less appealing. Take a look at the following propositions.

It’s called Guilty Until Proven Innocent and it’s in direct opposition of a fundamental right in our legal system.

If you want to disable someone’s car just splash some booze through the window.

Funny. This technology was once exclusively reserved for criminals. What does it tell you that they want to make it mandatory for everyone?

No Way!

The devices of the late ‘90s were calibrated to detect far less than the limit of .08.

My office had a food spread on the last day before the long T-giving weekend. Jalapeno poppers, summer sausage/cheese, chips/dips, etc.

The device would not allow the car start due to all of the garlic, peppers, etc. in the spicy foods. Called the firm and guy said that often occurred. Told me to drink milk and try again 30 minutes later. Didn’t work. Called a taxi.

"passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately detect whether the driver may be impaired,"

This is far more insidious than a breathalyzer. It will record you all the time and kill your car on command. Guaranteed it will some bill will be passed to restrict sale or use f unequipped cars.

Expand it to include potheads before it goes in cars.

There are far more accidents today caused by kids playing with their cell phone than drunks ever did.

The govt considers all are criminals unless proven otherwise…except those in the approved political and social groups.

IMO this will be the excuse to retro fit gas vehicles with remote kill switches.

How is having your car turn into a paperweight a positive thing? Also, of these things cost money. Each individual item may sound like a "nice to have", but when you add mandatory anti-lock brakes, cameras, a Mike Lindell style allotment of air bags, complex navigation systems tied into the camera and safety systems, high belt-lines, drunk sensors, speed nannies, etc. on top of expenses related to CAFE that cost more but hurt performance or long-term reliability (CVT, Turbo 4s on everything, ECONOMY mode default on start, taxes on performance cars to reduce prices on hybrids and EVs people don't want at full price), and that is how the $25,000 car becomes a $40,000 car.

Well, no. But as with all these programs, things look pretty good when you take measures to knock off the worst offenders (raising drinking, night driving age), increased enforcement, incentives for bars to cooperate, social pressure, etc. And if I recall the drunk accident rates have dropped a lot (it used to be REALLY bad). But to get the last 10,000, they are going after people who have barely drunk and now turns your new 2026 model car into an inspector.

I NEVER see a fatal accident report when the perp blew a .09%. It is ALWAYS .17 or higher when they publish. DeeDee Myers, despite her sins working as a Clinton Flack, was rooked when she was gotten for "impaired driving" because she got confused on a DC city street after having one drink (she had a .03% or something).

You are the designated driver and sober. Four friends pile into your car and they are sloshed. Then the car won’t start. Great idea!

when the people who pass or favor those laws get caught by them, I do not call that getting “rooked”

I call it getting comeuppance. Or sweet irony. Whatever floats your boat.

People opposed to the idiot laws that get caught by them on technicalities are the true ones that get rooked.
