China placed all 17 million residents in one of its biggest cities under lockdown on Sunday, as virus cases doubled nationwide to nearly 3,400 and anxiety mounted over the resilience of its ‘zero-Covid’ approach in the face of the worst outbreak in two years. The southern tech hub of Shenzhen told all residents to stay at home as it struggles to eradicate an Omicron flare-up linked to the neighbouring virus-ravaged city of Hong Kong.
The lockdown and a suspension of public transport will last until March 20, a city government notice said, adding that it would launch three rounds of mass testing.
The move extends an earlier lockdown imposed on the city’s central business district.
“If prevention and control is not strengthened in a timely and decisive manner, it could easily become large-scale community transmission,” Shenzhen health official Lin Hancheng said at a Sunday briefing.

Their “case” statistics are as junky as ours, so why report their lockdown excuse as truth?

Just wait till the supply chain reacts.
Shenzhen, the first “Special Economic Zone” established under Deng, is I believe still the biggest manufacturing city in China. Was there once in the early 2000’s. Shutting it down would be the equivalent of our shutting down Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland during the 1950’s, or Silicon Valley in the 90’s. It is also a fairly short ride in a hydrofoil transport up the Pearl River from Hong Kong. If the story’s true (big “if”) it could have a serious impact on China’s economy, and even affect HK.
I was there yesterday and head back there today (in Dubai now). Everyone we see at the airport are dressed as though there is a real pandemic. We’ll see what happens when we arrive, staying in a quarantine hotel as it is where we can’t leave our rooms. In fact, the room key only works once for entry. Good times…
South Korea is very Covid “hot” right now. Daily cases still rocketing upward. Ditto for fatalities. Current fatalities are running ~2.5x their Delta wave. It looks like their system of surveillance (world’s best?) and containment (VERY rigorous since early on) may have met it’s match with Omicron.
China has not reported any Covid deaths for months, which is flat out impossible. But, I can believe “strong containment” until now. Will Omicron “bust through it”?
How long are you quarantined? Not quite 2 months ago we had acquaintances go to S. Korea from the US and get quarantined 2 weeks upon arrival.
Oh, whatever. 🙄
Even if you paid me a million dollars, i’ll still say no. Can’t put a price on freedom. Any country that requires me to “quarantine” is an instant no to me. I think Mexico handled it the best. No mandates ever.
We’re quarantined for the duration of our stay, my last layover was 28 hours, the next one is 24. There is no option to leave the hotel or room for that matter. This job used to be fun. Now, not so much…
time to ratchet it up
