On top of everything else, now a highly pathogenic avian influenza pandemic is ripping across the United States, and it has already resulted in the deaths of almost 2.8 million birds. Most of the birds that have died have been chickens or turkeys.

With new outbreaks in Iowa and Missouri, nearly 2.8 million birds — almost entirely chickens and turkeys — have died in one month due to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), the Agriculture Department said on Monday.

Since 1997, bird flu has had about a 50 percent death rate in humans.

Did they ever figure out what was killing birds last summer? We were told to quit feeding the birds for 2 months or more. It perplexed me because Robins are ground feeders, but they were still succumbing, supposedly. So it wasn’t something AT the feeders.

From the article, "When one bird in a flock tests positive, all of the birds have to be put down. That is how authorities try to contain the disease." Might that be partially responsible for the high number of dead birds? Ooopsy... guess our PCR test for bird flu might have had a lot of false positives. Sorry!
