Ukraine’s Bio-Lab Security Is Becoming an Issue
National Review ^ | March 9, 2022 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 03/11/2022 6:26:33 AM PST by tlozo

On the menu today: Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Why does it always come back to biological-research labs? No, Ukraine does not have a secret biological-weapons program — or at least there’s no proof of one. A biological-research facility and a biological-weapons-research facility are not the same thing — but even if Ukraine has no biological weapons, that doesn’t mean the stuff in the country’s various labs can’t be dangerous. And the U.S. — and the world — have good reasons to not want a bunch of hungry, young, poorly briefed Russian conscripts traipsing through biological-research labs with samples of who-knows-what in vials and petri dishes in the sample fridges. Meanwhile, the IAEA passes along more ominous reports from Chernobyl.

There are over 4,000 registered microbiological laboratories in Ukraine, but only 2 of them have a permit to work with microorganisms of the first pathogenic group, 402 laboratories have a permit to work with the microorganisms of the second pathogenic group, and all others are allowed to work only with microorganisms of the third and forth pathogenic groups. Here it is necessary to note that the classification of pathogenic organisms and therefore classification of the laboratories in Ukraine differs from the international one. It is inverted (i.e., in Ukraine “one” is the highest risk and “four” is the lowest risk) and also has some additional differences.

According to the available data, there are no laboratories in Ukraine that fulfill BSL-4 requirements. One of the laboratories that has a permit to work with the microorganisms of the first pathogenic group did, however, recently undergo an international audit as a BSL-3 laboratory and received a preliminary positive evaluation.

Even biosafety-level-two laboratories work with some nasty stuff — e.g., hepatitis, HIV, salmonella. Biosafety-level-three laboratories work with microbes that can cause serious or deadly diseases through inhalation — e.g., Covid-19, tuberculosis, yellow fever, SARS, West Nile, some strains of influenza.

Biosafety-level-four laboratories work with the most dangerous pathogens that carry the highest risk of infecting lab personnel — e.g., Ebola, Nipah, Marburg. Biosafety-level-four laboratories work with the most dangerous pathogens that carry the highest risk of infecting lab personnel — e.g., Ebola, Nipah, Marburg.

Ukraine does not have a level-four lab today. Just as it did a decade ago, Ukraine has thousands of labs, but only a handful work with airborne, potentially deadly pathogens, and a few hundred work with “moderate-risk agents.” Yes, Ukraine has biological-research facilities. A “biological-research facility” is not the same as a biological-weapons-research facility. (Although it is worth noting that a lot of research into dangerous pathogens is dual-use; the more you know about how to fight dangerous viruses and bacteria, the more knowledge you could theoretically apply to weaponizing viruses and bacteria.) When state-owned Russian media such as TASS breathlessly echo a Russian official’s statement that “In Ukraine, a network of more than 30 biological laboratories was created,” they really want your mind to insert the word “weapons” in between “biological” and “laboratories.”

Any major university or major hospital/medical center is going to have a lab that, at minimum, will have samples that may include dangerous or contagious pathogens collected from patients, etc., separate from any labs doing medical research on these kinds of viruses and bacteria

Here we go.
Will Biden escalate under the pretense of keeping “bio labs” out of Russian hands?

This may be why Putin is calling them “bio weapons”. It’s a pre-emptive move to make the west look bad for intervening against them. If they are just innane bio-research labs, then this is a nice chess move by Putin to get some control on pretext

Jim is wrong. You can do both activities in those labs.

I see the National Review is jumping in to protect the scumbags in Washington DC who have been funding bio-labs in very nasty places around the world.

What will be the next shoe to drop? Could the USA have been the ones who funded WMD labs in Iraq???????

They called Wuhan just a “research” lab too.

A common-sense article - yes, there are such “dangerous” bio-research labs all around the world. It doesn’t mean they are weapons labs.

For better or worse, Fauci, NIH and Fed.gov probably have their fingers and money in a lot of them - just like they did at Wuhan Institute of virology - giving lots of money through agents, doing research that was illegal in the USA.

And just like with Wuhan, NIH/Fed.gov probably will hide information or give public BS about them, to hide their law-breaking and corruption.

Must’ve missed it but what’s in the bio safety level 1 place?

You noticed, too.

Why are so many of these labs necessary? Who is directing their activities? Surely stating the obvious, but something is very very wrong.

I’ll venture to state that the US has some EXPLAINING to do, now that we’ve seen what happens when these types of labs let go of a virus, as we saw in Wuhan.

They called Wuhan just a “research” lab too.

~~~
Good point.
So if we intervene to keep them out of Russian hands, doesn’t it still kindof prove their point. If the “research” isn’t weaponized, then it’s not black-and-white by definition. But if the “research” can be weaponized, then it’s a serious gray area. In other words, what’s so special about this research that it would have to get protected from the Russians?
Maybe it isn’t that special. But why is our ‘intelligence community’ so nervous?
Why Ukraine? All of the corrupt US politicians seem to have dirty business dealings there. Hunter Biden, The DNC server, Soro’s experiment, now US Bio Labs.....
And no, I don't trust the US government anymore after Dear Leader Fauci and the NIH and gain of function and the Wuhan lab, mask on mask off mask on, vaccines are 100% safe, blah blah blah. The US government has lied to us the past two years and it is hard to trust anything that they say are claim now. Oh, and I am a racist white, Christian, male. I'm evil according to the same people are denying that there are no US bio labs in Ukraine.
Maybe you shouldn't be demonizing and hating your own people. The same people that you need supporting you if/when you end up in a war.
What is in Ukraine... a third world dictatorship that has been at war with Russia forever.
I googled Fauci..Labs Ukraine...Nothing
I'll try again. He's in charge of the funding. That's his big job...that's why no one says anything against him.
Of course, you can. But, that would be suicidal for the staff and they would know it.
Micros of different danger levels have to be physically separated within the building — lock doors, different security, yada yada. 2 reasons, to keep dumass 1 from going into place two, and keep outsider with pass for place one from strolling into two and stealing.
Anything < that is eventual suicide.
Australia has four level 4 labs and a bunch more level 3 labs as well. Does it mean Australia has a bioweapon program?
If Australia was invaded one of the things I’d worry about is the contents of those labs falling into the hands of idiots and scumbags.
