In the annals of manufactured scandals by TV networks, one of the lamest examples was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ telling high school students at an event of his: “You do not have to wear those masks. I mean, please take them off. Honestly, it’s not doing anything, and we’ve got to stop this COVID theater.”
“NBC Nightly News” tried to make this a story for not just one night, but two. It’s lame because it came after everyone took off their masks for the State of the Union address, after the “nonpartisan” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ruled against mask mandates just a few days before President Joe Biden’s big speech.
It’s also lame because days before, NBC’s own “Saturday Night Live” aired a skit satirizing urban liberals who worried that maybe they had been wrong about the spread of COVID-19. In the skit, one woman said she read an article, and her husband was trying to stop her from talking about it.
“It was in Bloomberg, and I thought it was interesting … it was just saying how mask mandates had, I don’t know, little to no effect on COVID,” she said. Then they all made faces of horror for laughs.
This article is real. Faye Flam is a Bloomberg Opinion columnist and host of the podcast “Follow the Science.” She wrote: “Masks have been the most visible part of America’s pandemic response, but one of the least consequential.” And: “There’s no avoiding it: The benefits of universal masking have been difficult to quantify.”
Republicans like DeSantis who have opposed mask mandates, especially for children in schools, have been painted as evil. He’s “DeathSantis”; he’s “the DeSantis variant”; he leads a “death cult.”
But Flam wrote:

Medical is the worst.
I mean no offense to you or most in the profession.
But the PTB have determined it’s all about COVID and only about COVID FEAR. My experience besides foolery of masking and no advocates and dying alone has not been pleasant. Since we’re still going to doctors, it has not let up. Only slight changes.
My favorite disconnect is in the fall and winter between my sons oral surgeon and my mothers doctor (which ended in a yelling match one time because I was honest about testing my son for COVID and they wanted to throw us out which they did put off my mothers treatment).
Moms doc started requiring only surgical (paper) masks, specifically prohibiting cloth.
At the same time, the oral surgeon - in the same exact area - required only cloth, no paper!
These damn fools.
Happens to us all . . .
Common sense is very controversial these days.....
I supervise a small crew of housekeepers and we were hoping around like crazy the last two years.
I've been exposed to this filthy thing four times that I've been officially told and I didn't develop so much as a sniffle. The ER I work in is in a hospital in southern NJ and last night in the ER we had one, count 'em ONE Covid case and it turned out to be a ''false positive'' and the patient was discharged after about six hours.

This may be a bit arrogant, but I think I’m one of the few people who has experienced every angle of this hysteria since it started 2 years ago. I’ll match my “holistic” experience with how it’s been handled to just about anyone. I’ve had death, once, and lots of non-stories illness. I’ve been kicked out of appointments because it was “too soon” since I had the actual disease and couldn’t see my oncologist in person for months (televisit first, 2 mos delayed from that out-kicking). I’ve had dental issues that started prior that were put off more. Never mind all the other mystery diagnoses that were put off or hassled because of this nonsense, including “no advocates”.
And this is not mentioning the social hysteria, including my boy (14 today) has been totally cut off from his 2 friends right behind us for this solid 2 years, because they are ninnies who are scared of everything. I think they have made it so they don’t like him anymore. But who knows, since they won’t talk to us?
I hate it. I hate it all. It’s been very cruel from every quarter.

All of this bs for a virus that has a 99% survival rate.
Imagine if on June 6, 1944 those Americans landing on Omaha Beach had those kind of odds.
WW2 in Europe would have been over in two weeks.
Thanks jma. Yes, I could see a bit of caution in the very beginning, but by 6 mos I was so over it (especially with the freaking out by medical places after the first few weeks - when some of my doctors scoffed at it). I got COVID within the year. Many of us did. No big deal.
