As I commented to someone else, I completely missed the effective date when I posted the story. While it’s ridiculous, my guess is to get the financing to the sheriff’s offices straightened out. The sheriffs complained a little about criminals suddenly running around with guns (like they don’t already) but mostly they complained about the money they will lose, which I have no doubt is very significant. The process to get a permit in the county I live in is about as easy as it can be, and lots and lots of people get permits.
Deliberately lax enforcement if they were carrying concealed - Alabama first banned concealed carry in 1839. Open carry was little restricted, though.
Jan 1 is the standard effective date for regular, non-emergency legislation in Alabama, apparently. It’s not special for this bill.

Yes, happy this went through, except it says it is not valid until January 1st, 2023. My danged permit runs out this June. I guess they will have some short term permit to cover those 6 months. I carry all the time, so I guess me and the little lady will have to get whatever we have to get, whether 6 months or they probably will make us pay for three years. Make every dollar they can before January 1st date.
You know that is a great thought. I had not even given that a thought. Will Alabama offer permits even though you don't need one so that you can carry in states that normally honor your permit from your home state?? Lots of great questions coming from this.
Exactly right, the damned criminals and thugs will always have a gun, ESPECIALLY AFTER THEY take away guns, as in Australia did! Their home invasion break-ins jumped like 450% right after guns were outlawed there. They will always have guns. No matter what!!!!!!

Tennessee went Lifetime permit a few years before we went Permitless. I still carry my Permit badge, especially when I carry open.

As Spktyr pointed out to me, January 1st is the date generally that new laws take effect. It’s not just Alabama, either. I believe it’s the standard pretty much everywhere. If you travel you still want to have a permit for potential reciprocity issues. If you’re retired military as your screen name suggests (I am, too) you shouldn’t have to pay for it.
bout time Bama joined the club. Y’all were dragging your feet on this one. Of course in Bama most folks who are inclined to carry would do so , law or not.

I don’t think we will see any significant crime reduction over this because everyone who is inclined to carry does so already. We had the same results with the George Floyd riots. They tried one that lasted about an hour before police shut it down, then they tried to block an interstate and that didn’t last long either. They actually charged and convicted a woman with a federal crime for breaking police vehicle window.
This ain’t Minneapolis.

I am retired Army, and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office makes me, and my wife pay for them. I told them I was military at the desk. My first cousin used to be the sheriff, and he never told me that I didn’t have to pay since I was retired Army.

“(b) Any retired military veteran who meets the conditions for issuance of a pistol permit pursuant to Section 13A-11-75 shall be eligible to obtain the pistol permit without paying a fee for the permit. Upon approval of the pistol permit application, the pistol permit shall be issued by the sheriff of the county in which the veteran resides upon presentation by the retired military veteran of the United States government issued Veteran Identification Card or a DD-214 Proof of Military Service form and sufficient proof that the person is a military retiree. The retired military veteran shall apply for renewal as required by law, but shall be eligible to obtain renewed pistol permits without paying a fee as long as he or she meets the conditions for renewal of the permit.”
