WARSAW, Poland (AP) — In a private video call with American lawmakers over the weekend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a “desperate” plea to the United States to help Kyiv get more warplanes to fight Russia’s invasion and retain control of its airspace.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken says Washington has given a “green light” to the idea and is currently “very, very actively” looking at a proposal under which Ukraine’s neighbor Poland would supply Kyiv with Soviet-era fighters and in turn receive American F-16s to make up for their loss.

However, the proposition is fraught with uncertainty

Same reason the Russians sent their state of the art aircraft to North Korea and North Vietnam. Using Russian provided gear, North Vietnam shot down 10,000 US aircraft.

I read today that most of Ukraine’s airfields were destroyed early in the war, and Russia thought that had grounded the airforce.

Instead they are operating from improvised runways on highways and roads. Planes are being kept in farmers barns with only one or two at any given location.

PRES. BIDEN: “How did we get to the place where, you know, Putin decides he’s gonna just invade Russia? Nothing like this has happened since World War II.”

It is just too bad that a sufficient number of Ukrainian pilots are not trained on or have the expertise to operate A-10 Thunderbolt II “Warthogs”, as these are perhaps the best of close air support aircraft in use today.

Coming in at about 50 feet off the deck at 350 knots and strafing a convoy pretty much puts a halt to any forward advancement of logistical support. And a one-second burst of fire from the Gatling gun in its nose pretty much busts up most armored vehicles.

It is a good idea. It helps both Ukraine and Poland.

For Putin’s warning about escalating the conflict right now he has a good bit of his military with their hands full, so the chance of him rolling tanks into NATO countries (or even non-NATO nations) are pretty slim.

Heck, a 40 mile long piece of his military seems to be stuck in the mud right now. Some “blitzkrieg” he’s got going on there.

And as far as the nuclear option goes people forget we have our own nuclear option available, as do many European nations. The MAD doctrine still applies.

We should be sending Ukraine as many weapons, planes and drones (that they can operate) as possible.

No,we should not be giving Ukraine more weapons. It will only delay the inevitable. Putin needs to kick ass and end this.

Actually, Russia would have known better - they fly many of the same types and they knew that if the planes survived they could operate from improvised strips. Those aircraft were designed with that specific capability in mind.

The targets in the airfield strikes was not the actual airfield itself but the aircraft - in third party satellite pics of the airfields, it’s apparent that the Russian airstrikes were aimed at aircraft, hangars, revetments and parking areas and not the actual runways. The Russians have specialty runway denial and runway destruction munitions just as other major nations do and they didn’t use them.

They did have and were trained on the second best ground attack craft, the SU-25 Frogfoot.

I doubt that planes will help ... probably best to send Hunter, Kerry’s spawn, Romney’s spawn, etc. and corrupt the country so well that even the Russians will leave in disgust.

The moment NATO planes get involved then you can confirm this was all on the table for war with Russia from the get go...on Ukraines turf. I think it was anyway.
