Amidst Omicron, political discord, and extreme weather disasters, 2022 hasn’t brought much good news. But flying under the radar is a game-changing story about state budget surpluses that could set New England on a path to tackling some of the biggest issues of our time: climate collapse and deep inequality.
Our states are flush with extra cash, thanks in part to relief money, federal infrastructure funding, and tax revenue that held steady during the pandemic. And it’s not chump change.
What to do with this money is the question. As labor leaders and advocates who represent the millions of working New Englanders who keep our region running, our answer is simple: invest in a pro-worker, climate-safe future.
In Maine, unions are organizing to invest part of the budget surplus in growing and permanently funding apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs that expand access to clean energy careers — particularly for Maine communities most overlooked by these opportunities. The new Maine Labor Climate Council is also planning to launch a carbon-free and healthy schools campaign.
These are just a few examples of the opportunity these budget surpluses present within New England. Even if we pass federal climate policy stalled in Congress, it’s clear that the future of climate action lies with cities and states. The labor movement is leading the way. Now it’s the time for state lawmakers to invest our money in getting it done.

“...climate collapse and deep inequality....” WOW! Now I get it. It’s a wonder anyone wants to migrate here. See the states are now FLUSH with money. Yeah, part of the reason we’re $30 trillion in debt. Which will never be paid so why all the hubub? I wonder if any of these 3 would somehow benefit from this crap?
In other words, piss the fake, inflation generating, fake federal money down the drain on union patronage. Shameless.
As a refugee from Ct, I can tell you the state unions drained Ct taxpayers like vampires.
Satan’s minions on the left never stop.
What the hell is this piece of crap article doing in the Freerepublic????
Union knuckle draggers!

Deep inequality????
Hyperbole much?

How about pay down debt?
Connecticut has a budget surplus? Hey, LaMoron, why not cut taxes and spending? Yes, try that. 🤓
Confiscatory tax rates.

American tax payer funding period, we are funding our own demise
The Republican and Democrat Politicians will divide it up. It will go up their noses. Into their arms, legs, and between the toes of the females. And to pay for the services of their call boys and call girls. Kinda like they do the Ukrainian graft money. And the kickbacks they get from Big Pharma from the viruses and jabs. In my opinion.
WWIII looms, Union leaders worried about climate change and proper personal pronouns ...

LOL shows how foolish the MSM are.
Nobody pointing out that Caliph Baraq bought one oceanside mansion and is building another.
What to do with this money is the question.
I have little doubt they'll waste it on woke projects and internal pocket lining.
