With the word ‘Nazi’ tossed around promiscuously, let’s understand the term

The word “Nazi” is suddenly everywhere. This isn’t the modern habit of calling everyone we don’t like a “Nazi.” Instead, because of events in Ukraine, the word is showing up in the news, where it has real-world ramifications.

During WWII, the Germans occupied Ukraine and battled their way across the Western half of the USSR. In Ukraine, while Ukrainian citizens suffered greatly at Nazi hands, no Jew forgets that the Ukrainians enthusiastically joined in the Holocaust. At Babyn Yar, where almost 34,000 Jews were shot to death over a couple of days, it was the Ukrainians who pulled the triggers.

Meanwhile, although Russia and Germany were once allies thanks to the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, Hitler reneged on that agreement, probably to have access to Soviet oil supplies. The Germans invaded Russia leading to some of the bloodiest battles of WWII.

In both countries—Russia and Ukraine (which was then part of the Soviet Union)—the Nazi era seared itself so deeply into the respective countries’ psyches that it’s scarcely surprising that the word “Nazi,” and accusations based upon that word, instantly appeared once Russia invaded Ukraine.

Many people have no idea what is meant by the word “Nazi.” The whole thing is especially complicated because the political notions of left wing and right wing, which infuse any conversation about “Nazis,” have different meanings in America and Europe.

For starters, continental Europe has never known liberty like America’s constitutional liberty, which centers the government around the individual, not the state. The origin of the terms “left wing” and “right wing” highlight this point.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish and l his grandfather fought the German Nazis during WWII. Perhaps it is known that Zelensky lost ancestral relatives at the hands of the Nazis in concentration camps.

Yes, Ukraine, like much of the traditional Russian empire, has hosted significant anti-Semitism.

However, this past *is not the dominant situation today*, as the president and prime minister are both Jewish.

The Ukrainians have tasted freedom since the breakup of the Soviet empire in 1990s and despite corruption do not want to return to totalitarian control. Further, they have indicated through their resistance that they do not want to be Russian.

That’s true. The left refers to the European scale to put fascism on the American right. Best I can tell the European scale is Fascism on the Right and Communism on the left. America as founded isn’t even on that scale.

I think of it like taking the European scale, rotating it 90 deg (so the line is vertical) then drawing a line perpendicular out to the right. The new scale is % government control, with the right being 0% and the left being 100%. This is the American scale. I’m on the right. Hitler would be far to the left.

That’s the way I think of it anyways.

My uncle of German and Scottish linage, was dirt poor and obviously a nobody.. landed on one of the beaches of Normandy .. took shrapnel to his head.. the doctors put in a metal plate to keep his brain in tact, and he was then sent back into battle.. my uncle had not one thing to do with WWI that seeded the mad Adolp to see occultist delusions of supremacy….

Never forget that Ukraine suffered is own holocaust at the hands of the Russians under Stalin in the Holodomor when the communists starved 7,000,000 Ukrainians to death. Good reason for many of them to have supported the Germans in WW II.

How do you think this Ukraine war ends?

My guess is Putin will occupy only the access areas to Black Sea, and the war will end when Zelensky is no longer in power.
