Sumthin' to think about when we read all the "Oh, no's!" about Russia taking over the "world's breadbasket" Ukraine.
Hard not to notice that both the energy and food shortage appear almost intentional, purposely engineered for some nefarious reason.

I do remember the Agricultural Report early Sunday mornings. TV stations didn’t broadcast anything in the early mornings.
I wonder how much Bill Gates, largest US landholder, gets for not planting crops.
Interesting how the first two numbers in each set are exactly the same.
But that is still gloomy nonetheless.
Prices are set at the margin. If demand is high, even losing 10% of production will raise prices substantially. If Ukraine can’t/won’t sell to Russia and China, look for demand elsewhere to go up.
Prevented Planting is just that - for one reason or another (usually weather, but it gets pretty complicated) federally insured crops aren’t planted in the time frame they were expected to be planted in. This is not Payment in Kind.
Taking out less than 1% of the least productive land in an age of increasing per acre yields isn’t very alarming.
1) seen as environmentally bad to plant there (i.e. mess up rain runoff), and
2) to keep from oversupplying the food market with that particular food (ostensibly to keep the food price from going too far down for farmers to make a living), and
3) as you said, as an insurance in case weather or whatever prevented the farmer from planting.
That's a big chunk of the market to take offline. Similarly if Russian exports fall, the market will rise even more.
Yes. Wheat seems the biggest problem. Fortunately, there are places that can increase production.

Some small good news is that Australia’s crop for this year is forecast to be a record 36.6 million tonnes of wheat and 13.7 million tonnes of barley.
Nowhere near enough to plug the hole left by Russia and the Ukraine but a bit of positive news for a change.

Yeah but they will just turn it into beer LOL
Hah, that’s exactly what I thought when I clicked in here, and there it was.
You two are on a roll.
