The dog that spurred the State of North Carolina to enact tougher animal cruelty laws and inspired a nonprofit to combat cruelty to animals has been diagnosed with cancer.
Susie’s owner Donna Smith Lawrence said the face of Susie’s Hope and 2014 American Humane Hero Dog of The Year has bone cancer.

Poor pup. :(
I hope she survives this. But she is pretty old now.
Susie is about 12 years old now. It may be time to give her a hug, a kiss and gently end her long trial of suffering.
At this point, to keep her alive, undergoing even more surgeries and physical therapies seems more based on the sentimental feelings of her owners vs what’s good for the dog.
Poor doggo, hope she recovers and has some good years left in her yet.
One of my rescues that I picked up off the side of a state highway when they were 6-weeks old was diagnosed with inoperable bladder cancer six months ago. She and her sister will be 15 this year. She has been taking a tumor reducing pill for six months that is over $1 a pill and I feel like we came out cheap even after the x-rays and ultrasound.
I wish Susie the best. Mine got lucky that I found them. Not all pups are that lucky. Pox on people that mistreat dogs or any animal.
I forgot to mention that I took her to the Vet a week ago expecting that she would be euthanized but he said it wasn’t time. Right now it’s day-to-day but he said that as long as she will eat, she’s not passing blood, or in obvious pain, that she has more time. She’s down to 38 pounds from 55 pounds but she still seems happy. I’ll let her have all the happy days she wants to have.
Show me a person that deliberately mistreats a dog and I will show you someone unfit to live.
Love the pearls:)
You can kill an unborn child - no big deal, but hurt a dog you’re in deep sh!t. An animal is more important than a human child. You pay $4/gallon for gas, but we can’t build a pipeline to import cheaper fuel. Old folks freeze in the dark (texas last winter), but we have to use unreliable solar and wind to “save the planet.” (which doesn’t need saving) This country has its priorities backwards.
“Show me a person that deliberately mistreats a dog and I will show you someone unfit to live.”
...Or a cat or any of God’s creatures.
“...Or a cat or any of God’s creatures.”
Nice to see that you didn’t include cats in God’s creatures!

No one here said that. This thread is not about abortion. It is about cruelty to animals.

Twist it anyway you like. Everyone but idiots know what I meant.
ahhh... no humor allowed in cat landia world?
We can care about both, and we do.
With that being said, take your crap over to an abortion thread, this one is about an abused animal.......Sheesh!
In mid-August 2009, Susie was found in a Greensboro park ten days after she was beaten, set on fire and left to die; according to the nonprofit, Susie was eight weeks old when her owner broke her jaw, kicked out her teeth and set her on fire after the dog licked the face of the owner’s newborn.
Susie survived for those ten days by eating garbage and drinking water from mud puddles.
Three months later the person who abused Susie was caught but was only sentenced to serve four to five months of a suspended sentence for a Class I felony of cruelty to animals.
I'm a firm believer in vigilante justice.......
💯 I’m an extremely non-violent person but I could hurt a person that I caught mistreating a dog. My dad always said to never trust a person a dog doesn’t like.
I can understand a person not wanting a dog for many reasons like no time, no money, etc. but when I hear a person say they hate dogs, I stay away from that person. Dogs know.
That said, I hope that prayer does ease this dog's discomforts and her path forward. She has been an unintentional heroine.
