Last night, the wife and I attended a dinner party with two other couples. The hosts, old friends endowed with equally large amounts of generosity and common sense, laid out a feast of food and drink, and played Switzerland for the night. They discussed pressing issues good-naturedly and stayed far away from the dangerous third rail of politics.
My saintly wife wants nothing to do with talking politics, she’s always made kind, upbeat conversation, or said nothing at all. Despite her peaceful nature, however, she threatened me with severe sanctions on the ride over, should I disturb the dinner party peace with my often loud and sarcastic political observations. The reason for the warning was the third couple attending, also old friends, who are widely considered to be smart, accomplished, generous and kind.
But, sadly, in my un-humble opinion, their political views come straight from CNN or the New York Times. I can accurately predict what they’ll say on a given issue before they open their mouths, for they suffer from the mental disorder of liberalism.
Now I should have heeded my wife’s advice and emulated our hosts’ strategic non-involvement. But to keep quiet in the face of absurd leftist claptrap would’ve required me to first duct tape my mouth securely, and then don two N-95 masks over that, just in case, actions that would have severely curtailed my ability to suck down Heinies.
So, with Heineken in hand, I did my usual schtick, listening to the conversations and picking my spots to deliver caustic, yet occasionally hilarious, commentary.

😂 LOL that’s funny.
Been there....done that. You and your wife are wise.
I think most of us have been there done that.
My wife is a liberal Dem. I keep rubbing it in with each Biden fiasco.
How can someone so intelligent be so dumb about politics. She went straight from high school to med school at Northwestern and was an MD at age 24. Interned at Yale, Residency at Duke, Professor at Med School many years, and she is a freaking idiot.
I’m serious, how can smart people be so dumb?
I used to be like McArdle. I have a whackjob SIL that lives and breathes Nicolle WallAss.
But the last 5 years or so, I’ve taken a sabbatical, in the name of family ‘harmony’.
Thankfully, my brother has come around (somewhat). We’ve discussed his predicament several times. Both he and his bride make good coin.
Been thinking about asking him how it feels to be a political cuckold.
Methinks this is still a step too far. ‘Pod
I belong to a motorcycle club and ride with a group of seniors every Wednesday Our destination is a restaurant for breakfast or lunch. There are several liberals in the group who are not shy about expressing their CNN opinions. We Fox News folks fire right back. No one ever gets mad.
I think conservatives are too restrained from speaking up by a sense of manners and not wanting to provoke a confrontation. My little group proves that it is possible.
ps
Liberals hate being called commies.
I would have sent my regrets. No banquet is worth the blood pressure inducing arrogance and stupidity.
Yeah, we’ve all been there with “that liberal couple” that gets all their talking points from Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.
Seems like high IQ and common sense are both independent variables.
That is exactly why I can’t hang around with liberals-They are too blind to see the truth and when it’s pointed out to them that look at you like a pig looking at a wristwatch. Worse yet, is when they finally see the truth, they act as if they were the ones to be the first to see. Too frustrating.
I walk away, leave or refuse the invite my patience for stupidity has ended
My S-I-L and family thought they were going to have me submit to their covid rapid test in MY garage before they came into MY house for Christmas dinner. I cancelled their appearance and, thus, my family harmony sabbatical has just begun.
“So, with Heineken in hand”
well thats part of the problem—get rid of this piss “beer” and things will improve on all fronts
Kind of like dinner in the outhouse. LOL
“Seems like high IQ and common sense are both independent variables.”
I totally agree.
Doogie-ette Howser?
(Relax, it’s just a joke.)
In YOUR house?! That takes some nerve.
We had one remaining lib friend. Not an actual friend, but the husband of my good friend who died in 2018. We thought it would be kind to stay in touch with him in his grief.
Then the election was stolen. We kicked him to the curb and cut off all ties. We even had heavy frosting put on our front door windows since he had a habit of stopping by unannounced, and we didn’t want him to look in and see if we were home.
Yes, I have..
And she replied, “I must have been to marry you!”
She does have a fabulous sense of humor.
Rd later.
