Zelensky told Axios in a statement on Monday that his country “needs the West to impose a no-fly zone,” a significant escalation potentially tantamount to an act of war.
“The sanctions are heading in the right direction. In addition to disconnecting the Russian Central Bank from SWIFT and providing more Stingers and anti-tank weapons, we need the West to impose a no-fly zone over significant parts of Ukraine,” Zelensky said in a statement to Axios.
“Ukraine can beat the aggressor. We are proving this to the world. But our allies must also do their part,” he added.
On Monday, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told MSNBC that it is “not something the president wants to do,” and “that’s not a good idea.”

“Well, here’s what’s important for everybody to know about a no-fly zone: What that would require is implementation by the U.S. military,” Psaki said. “It would essentially mean the U.S. military would be shooting down planes, Russian planes.”
“That is definitely escalatory,” she continued. “That would potentially put us into a place where we’re in a military conflict with Russia – that is not something the president wants to do.”
Per Axios, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told MSNBC that there are “no intentions” for such action.
“We have no intentions of moving into Ukraine neither on the ground or in the airspace,” said Stoltenberg. “We have a responsibility to make sure that this doesn’t spiral out of control that escalates even further into concern for full-fledged war in Europe involving NATO allies.”
In a tweet Friday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger stated that the West should “declare a #NoFlyZone over Ukraine.”

Z knows he’s doomed if Russia gets control of the airspace.
How about a “No Fly Zone” in the United States where Democrats don’t fly illegal alien invaders around the country?
Mr. Zelensky knows neither NATO nor any NATO member will do that, but he has nothing to lose by asking.
Kitzinger is just being an idiot. It’s actually embarrassing now.
Ukrainians were with us in Afghanistan and Iraq as well.
Does that answer your question?
Yep. And it will be the last I’m sure.
Uhhh; yeah dude, they were, Iraq also!
Depends on the situation. Are you prepared for a nuclear exchange?
So you can read minds? Specifically Putin’s?
His past actions over decades tells a tale that should not be dismissed. Ruthless would be an understatement.
Putin’s aggressive behavior that we’re seeing now is cause for caution, but a signal that this country needs to change its focus dramatically.
If he wants to continue, then everyone needs to stand united against that aggression and declare an ultimatum. Be prepared to follow through with that ultimatum, as I believe Putin is prepared to follow through with his threats.
We don’t know what his true motives are nor his goals. Believing he is bluffing and is concerned with “casualties” is a serious gamble.
His actions have already woken many fears upon the complacent, and now most of the world is doing whatever they can to punish Russia for their actions, short of triggering a direct conflict. Everyone is trying to avoid nukes flying. That’s not fear, it’s attempting to save life on this planet from extinction.
Who knows, Putin may have secretly built the doomsday ship they once rejected that would sail the seas waiting for the day it lost communication with home and would automatically detonate. Loaded with enough radioactive material to sterilize the planet. If the USSR was destroyed, then there was to be this final revenge.
Fools rush in. Analyze and prepare. The world is changing dramatically right now.
