On cusp of Biden speech, a state of disunity, funk and peril

WASHINGTON (AP) — In good times or bad, American presidents come to Congress with a diagnosis that hardly differs over the decades. In their State of the Union speeches, they declare “the state of our union is strong” or words very much like it.

President Joe Biden’s fellow Americans, though, have other ideas about the state they’re in and little hope his State of the Union address Tuesday night can turn anything around.

The state of the union is disunity and division. It’s a state of exhaustion from the pandemic. It’s about feeling gouged at the grocery store and gas pump. It’s so low that some Americans, including prominent ones, are exalting Russian President Vladimir Putin in his attack on a democracy.

Measures of happiness have hit a bottom, with fewer Americans saying they are very happy in the 2021 General Social Survey than ever before in five decades of asking them.

This what a grand funk looks like.

A year into Biden’s presidency, polling indeed finds that he faces a critical and pessimistic public. Only 29% of Americans think the nation is on the right track.

Exactly. They are equating opposition to war as support for Putin, something they never did when the left opposed Bush's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then, dissent was not called treason, even by conservatives. They are also saying that when we say our most dangerous enemies are here at home, that THIS is support for Putin.

If you live in inner-city Chicago, you fear your local gangs, not the gangs in Baltimore, and you'd be mad if your local authorities focused more on Baltimore than your own problems.

What can he brag about? The secure border with Ukraine and Russia or the secure border with USA and Mexico? Energy costs? Consumer confidence? “Shutting down the virus?” Business growth? Low inflation? Expanded peace and freedom? His bold strong action against Russia after a year of Russian troop build up before this invasion? All he can “brag” about is putting the most radical ‘check boxes’ in positions of power. but I have a feeling this will be a non stop “It’s Trump’s fault” speech.

Liberal run cities and schools are cr@p. Inflation has driven up the cost of goods, food and energy such as natural gas, gasoline, diesel and electricity. All this has happened since Biden became president. We are going to vote in November 2022 to kick out all Democrats who have enabled this mess.
