LIVE: Putin puts nuclear deterrent on 'special alert'
BBC News ^ | Feb 27 | BBC

President Putin has ordered his military command to put nuclear forces on a "special" state of alert.

This is after what Moscow calls "aggressive statements" by Nato countries.

Russia's leader had already issued a coded warning that he was willing to use nuclear weapons as he began his invasion of Ukraine.

Last week, he warned that "whoever tries to hinder us" would see consequences "you have never seen in your history".

These words were widely interpreted as signalling a threat to use nuclear weapons if the West stood in his way.

The very public shift to high alert status is a way for Moscow to send a warning. Moving to alert status is likely to make it easier to launch weapons more quickly. But it does not mean there is a current intent to use them.

Russia has the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world but also knows that Nato also has enough to destroy Russia if they were used.

But the aim is likely to try and deter Nato support for Ukraine by creating fears over how far he is willing to go and creating ambiguity over what kind of support for Ukraine he will consider to be too much.

This won’t end well for everyone, if he does.

This just makes him look like a deranged madman, basically a laughingstock who’s lost it. He joined the Kim Il Jon club.

I’m afraid he’s going to do something stupid in desperation.

Who knows.

Unlike Kim they have the goods so to speak

...plus, there’s a guy with Alzheimers on the other side of the planet, who (in theory at least ;>) has control of his own ‘nuclear button’ - might want to go on alert, just to make sure the senile guy’s handlers are paying attention...

All fake news and misinformation.

ALL Russian assets have been ramped up for over a month in anticipation of the military action. Anyone who thinks otherwise has a Sesame Street level of understanding of the situation.

I don’t see an off-ramp for Putin.

He will look weak if he reverses course

“Not going well for Putin is it if he’s threatening to use nukes.”

It’s more like what the US calls “DEFCON” status rather than an order to attack. It varies, going up and down, right now it’s at 3, with DEFCON 5 being “normal” and DEFCON 1 being “kiss your ass goodbye”.

Putin’s not going to tell you if he launches. Hopefully the US still has that same policy.

Was at a wedding reception last night for a USAF pilot. Bombers. If they were on some sort of alert you wouldn’t know it.

I noticed a few people bringing up the Covid outbreak in the Kremlin (30 of the close insiders all came down at the same time)...around early September.

Some suggest that Covid ‘foggy-brain’ syndrome might be used to explain this mess, that he and the advisers were affected. A lot of these comments that he has uttered in the past month...don’t make sense or fit his typical routine.

Putin could nuke New York and London tomorrow and the MSM would still blame Trump.

The Cuba Missile crisis part II

For someone that grew up in the 1950s the idea of a Nuclear War being possible was real.

In our city they would test the air raid sirens every Monday at noon. There were public bomb shelters as well as private shelters. In schools we were taught to the warning signs of a nuclear blast and how to “duck and cover”.

As the 50s turned to the 60s and then there was decades when if you thought of the possibility of a nuclear war at all, it was as something in the past.

We have several generations that never experience the possibility of a global nuclear war. Well, the next few weeks are going to be an education so hang on kiddies we are in for a bumpy ride.

All it is going to take is just one “madman” (or in Biden’s case, one senile old man) to make a mistake and the situation will get out of control fast.
