Ukraine landed a significant blow on Russia Saturday after it allegedly killed a large group of bloodthirsty Chechen special forces dispatched to assassinate the country's president Volodymyr Zelensky.
The armed group - famed for their barbaric violence and human rights abuses - are said to have been obliterated after their convoy of 56 tanks was blown to smithereens near Hostomel, just northeast of Kyiv, by Ukrainian missile fire on the second day of the Chechens' deployment. It is unclear how many died - but the number is likely to run into the hundreds.
Their deaths were announced as officials in Kyiv revealed that they'd managed to maintain control of Ukraine's capital city throughout combat on Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
First Deputy Chairman of Kyiv City State Administration Mykola Povoroznyk said: 'The situation in Kyiv is calm, the capital is fully controlled by the Ukrainian army and the terror defense. At night there were several clashes with sabotage group.'
Among those said to have been wiped out was Chechen general Magomed Tushaev. He was commander of the 141th motorized national guard brigade - Chechen head of state Ramzan Kadyrov’s elite force.
Tushaev had also been pictured with Kadyrov, in a measure of his importance to the Chechen regime, which shot to notoriety in the west for hunting down, torturing and killing gay men.
Kadyrov is even believed to have visited his doomed squadron in a Ukrainian forest before their alleged deaths.
The terror squadron's reported killings are a crushing psychological blow for Vladimir Putin's stalled efforts to conquer Ukraine. The Russian premiere had dispatched the group to capture or kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, knowing full well that the fighters' brutal reputation would strike further fear into the hearts of besieged Ukrainians.

Should point out that these tankers were NOT Russian or Russian troops, but Chechen mercs who rely on their reputation, not training or skills. Basically mussies ready to kill the first hapless old lady or gay they found - fighting trained troops not so much.
Likely lined up, turrets open, waving flags, yelling and screaming their prowess, and was a turkey shoot for the Ukrainians
It's a lot more complicated than that.
One problem the Russians are facing is not knowing exactly who they're fighting. I'm familiar with Eastern Ukraine, having visited and married there and it's not so cut and dry. Most Ukrainians can speak Russian. Most of the Russians in the Donbas can speak Ukrainian, even if it's not their preferred language. Many of the uniforms they're wearing are irregular and not so distinguishable from each other. The weapons they're using are the same. Someone who speaks Ukrainian might be on the Russian side of the conflict. Someone speaking Russian might be on the Ukrainian side. My wife had a Russian mother and a Ukrainian father. That's common over there.
Western social media wants to slap a Ukrainian flag on their profile page and look at everything black and white, good vs. evil. It's not that simple.

Truth is the first casualty in any war. In this era of ubiquitous cell phones, its amazing that there is not more video evidence confirming what is happening.

There is lots of evidence, but its mostly on social media like Twitter, so no one believes it. Many seem to think that dead Russians should be lying around in piles to be photographed - the one I saw closest to that idea with 6-7 bodies in one spot, no one believed because there were not ‘enough’ bodies.
It should also be pointed out that when hit with modern weapons, many times there are no remains to be photographed. Also discounted are the Russian mobile crematoriums.
Even the trafficker of this propaganda only “alleges” such nonsense.
I doubt the 56 number too.
The interesting think is as long as Russia has controlled the Luhansk and Dombas oblasts they have not been able to breakout and make fast progress,
That makes sense since Ukrainian forces have been focused there for seven years.
Now the Ukrainians are facing two additional thrusts. One from Belarus and one from the Crimea. Those made progress but seem to have stalled.
Add in the failures of Russian special forces to take major airports.
The Russian Navy has hit at least two merchant ships. That may have shut down any exports and imports from both Russia and Ukraine.
All together the Russians aren’t coming across as super competent.
It is also reported that the RAF has loaded up and may have used their MAOB thermobaric bombs.
Regardless, the crowd here demands photographic evidence, else it did not happen ; most of them have no idea what it is like to be in an active war zone.
I like to ask them where are all the photos of the hundreds of murders and shootings in cities like Chicago or Baltimore. So maybe they are fake too, absent a photograph?
And where are the live streamers?

There were several on scene cell phones at the ready waiting for the action to begin and with that their instant internet fame.
The first two stuck their heads up to get an ideas were the best action shots would be and instantly lost their heads to heavy machine gun fire.
Another, more timid fellow, held up his cell phone over a wall, but an 82 mm mortar round landed a few feet away, leaving the hand with the phone intact.
Another dozen would be ‘live streamers’ ran for their lives, with one or two making it out with only a little loss of blood.
And where are the live streamers? Dead.

Where? Read the posts : Evidence demanded, no one could take out that many (glorious fearsome 10 foot tall Russians and their tanks), etc.

Is it possible? Anything is possible…. But given no video or even photographic evidence being presented…. Not likely.
This day and age this would be out there by now if such a thing had happened somewhere by now.
I have no doubt the Ukrainians are putting up as good of a fight as they can, but I am highly skeptical of claims of massive actions like this with no proof.
Looks like a T-72 turret - absent hull number or white marking paint, it could belong to either side.
I'm not saying the news report is true, but it's not impossible.
I’m still questioning things while praying for the people of Ukraine.
I spent several years working in a war zone. I saw the stark differences between the reality and what the media reported. It was often like night and day.
I will never trust the media.
I agree. Such a massive, successful ambush is very difficult to get in place and carry out.
Well you are correct. I’m old as dirt. I’ll have to rummage about for another analogy I guess.
But most of these reports aren’t ‘the media’, they are individual, in person reports, not corporate.
Or are individuals’ videos and stills taken of live actions and after actions also suspect in your book? in other worlds, are these shots of dead soldiers, blown tanks explosions fake by you?
Getting old is no fun, especially when trying to communicate to the younger set whose education often seems woefully lacking.
