Ukraine landed a significant blow on Russia Saturday after it allegedly killed a large group of bloodthirsty Chechen special forces dispatched to assassinate the country's president Volodymyr Zelensky.
The armed group - famed for their barbaric violence and human rights abuses - are said to have been obliterated after their convoy of 56 tanks was blown to smithereens near Hostomel, just northeast of Kyiv, by Ukrainian missile fire on the second day of the Chechens' deployment. It is unclear how many died - but the number is likely to run into the hundreds.
Their deaths were announced as officials in Kyiv revealed that they'd managed to maintain control of Ukraine's capital city throughout combat on Saturday night and into Sunday morning.
First Deputy Chairman of Kyiv City State Administration Mykola Povoroznyk said: 'The situation in Kyiv is calm, the capital is fully controlled by the Ukrainian army and the terror defense. At night there were several clashes with sabotage group.'
Among those said to have been wiped out was Chechen general Magomed Tushaev. He was commander of the 141th motorized national guard brigade - Chechen head of state Ramzan Kadyrov’s elite force.
Tushaev had also been pictured with Kadyrov, in a measure of his importance to the Chechen regime, which shot to notoriety in the west for hunting down, torturing and killing gay men.
Kadyrov is even believed to have visited his doomed squadron in a Ukrainian forest before their alleged deaths.
The terror squadron's reported killings are a crushing psychological blow for Vladimir Putin's stalled efforts to conquer Ukraine. The Russian premiere had dispatched the group to capture or kill Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, knowing full well that the fighters' brutal reputation would strike further fear into the hearts of besieged Ukrainians.

56 tanks blown up? I do not know if is true but it is possible. Also keep in mind that the press is identifying anything with tracks as a “tank,” including a BMP which is a lightly armored troop carrier.

Putin’s instinct would be to go scorched earth and he may have given such orders already. Rubio warned Russian military that they’d be hanged for war crimes if they carried out the orders they’ve been given.
Putin’s facing that possibility already. So he’s in Berlin Bunker mode at this point. Hopefully someone puts the briefcase bomb in the right spot…

And, yes, Ukraine is corrupt etc.
But rooting for more bloodshed of innocent civilians? Wait until the war comes to you and your family.

It still seems to be uniformed Ukrainian Military doing the fighting. I guess that all reservists have been called up.
Some weapons were reported distributed to civilians in Kiev, but just a small percentage of the population.
Both sides have the strongest motives to put out propaganda in their own favor.
However, I learned one thing which seems factual and explains much.
The bulk of the regular Ukrainian forces were faced off against the massed Russian forces brought up by Putin, along the disputed border of the "breakaway" Ukraininan territories of Donetsk and luhansk. So, the major Russian and Ukrainian forces are "pinning" each other in place.
Only a fraction of the Russian forces (maybe 1/4) in the region have moved against the capitol of Ukraine, the rest are facing off the main Ukrainian force.
I notice we are not getting reports of fighting in that area, or if we are, I have missed them.
Supposedly, there are about 200,000 regular Ukrainian forces (troops) and about 1 million reserve forces. The Russian forces in the area were reported at about 150,000 troops. The equipment varies considerably.
The latest report I’ve seen is that the Russians who moved into Kharkiv have all been eliminated.

It would not have been that difficult to emulate a reserve system like the ones in Israel or Switzerland, Finland, South Korea or even the US. Too bad they didn’t.
Well calling on freepers in the know...do those soldiers in post 74 look like Russian uniforms or Ukranian ones...
If this is true then tanks are obsolete.
I think there might be behind the scenes negotiations going on. Putin wants stability, no more NATO crazy talk, no more destabilizing corrupt American DS manipulation of Ukrainian affairs. If the Ukrainian leadership can accommodate Putin on these two very legitimate concerns, some of the current leadership might have a role in a future government. Putin is holding back, giving a more or less peaceful transition a chance. If Putin is rebuffed, Kiev will fall within 24 hours
