Russian President Vladimir Putin is “furious” that his invasion of Ukraine hasn’t been “easy” after Russian troops have been unable to take even one major city in three days of fighting, according to a member of the European Union Parliament who said he was citing Ukrainian intelligence reports.
“Putin is furious, he thought that the whole war would be easy and everything would be done in 1-4 days,” tweeted Riho Terras, who is also the former defense chief of NATO member Estonia, said in a lengthy thread on Twitter.

Of course, he also could have made the far smarter decision not to attack at all.

The blitzkrieg is over. Each day is going to help the Ukrainian defenders. Russian options are limited. They'll have to use Chechens as shock troops. They are fanatical so they do not fear death. Spectnaz units are made of quality but they are limited in numbers. They'll have to hold the conscripts back. They are not motivated to fight, they'll either get killed or they will surrender once they enter the city limits. Other option is to surround the city and to make them starve. But it's a big city so it's too easy to resupply it. Putin needed more troops here. Time is not on his side. So he needs to make a decision quickly to achieve favorable terms.

He literally picked the worst time of year to attack. Frozen ground thawing to mud forcing wheeled vehicles to use hard top. Moving off road means immobilization. Also removes the protection frozen ground provides from landmines. The foliage comes out in a month permitting improved concealment.
The situation is not suitable for a sustained campaign. Ergo he believed an echo chamber delusion of being welcomed as a liberator and occupying Ukraine at the outset.
Starting to believe the Putin medical issue theory. Or he intends to go nuclear. But against fellow slavs? I guess if he’s willing to kill his brothers he’s willing to kill his neighbors. “Surrender or face annihilation”. But he’s not a mongol?
If Ukraine had truly crumbled as expected, he would have been able to complete his invasion before the spring thaws. But at this point, it looks like General Mud may soon start to play a more significant role.

I don’t know much about Military strategy, but the Putin losing his mind was surrounded by other damning sentences which were essentially word-per-word what the same people said about Trump.

"Experts" thought he would attack by end of January. That was optimal to launch an attack. Then February came around. So we thought an attack was less likely.
