Islamist Kadyrov Ready to Unleash Thousands of Chechen Fighters on Ukraine

Ramzan Kadyrov, leader of the Russian Federation’s Muslim-majority Chechen Republic, is prepared to unleash up to 70,000 fighters on Ukraine to support his “commander-in-chief”, Vladimir Putin.

State-backed Russian news outlet RT published video footage on Friday showing an enormous rally of, it reported, 12,000 “local volunteers” in the Chechen capital of Grozny, with Kadyrov telling the assembly that his advice to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky was to “[call] our President, Supreme Commander Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, and [apologise] for not doing so sooner. Do it in order to save Ukraine. Ask for forgiveness and agree to all the conditions that Russia puts forward.”

They know they aren’t next so they are staying out of it. This is a military operation not an invasion to occupy. If it was Russian tanks would be sitting in Kiev square.

I think there’s an outside chance that once in-theater, these Chechens would turn on the Russians and join the Ukrainians.

More the Russians turning on the Chechens and then Putin for allying himself with Muslims against fellow Orthodox Christians. After years of restoring the church among the Russian people this would be seen as the deepest betrayal. An "Operation Valkyrie" can't be ruled out.

No they won’t, these are all soldiers of Chechnya’s regular standing paramilitary. They’re not yahoos being scooped up and given guns. They have been deployed combat in the behalf of Russia for over a decade.

67% percent of Ukrainians identify as Orthodox Christians. Putin is unleashing a Muslim army on them. What effect is this going to have in the Russian domestic sphere?

The Chechnyans are just like Slavs. They are fierce, but they might fight with you today, and turn their guns on you tomorrow. Chechnya has hated Putin as much as or more than Ukrainians. The Russians have murdered more Chechnyans that Ukrainians by far, so I think this might be disinformation. Don’t believe a damn thing you hear at this point from Putin, Biden, or the Media.

And there are FReepers who swear that Putina is “christian”.

The demographics for Russia do point to Islam though if things don’t change in the next 10-15 years.

Oh? Where have they been deployed? Georgia? Ukraine 2014? Middle East?

They are sending weapons. Although, in their case, there is a possibility they will need them.

The same Chechens that Putin has persecuted for decades??? I’m confused...

I thought the same thing and thought I'd misread the article.

This is what I remember of Russian-Chechen relations:

The deadliest school attack in Russia took place in 2004 in the city of Beslan, when Islamic militants took more than 1,000 people hostage for several days. The siege ended in gunfire and explosions, leaving 334 dead, more than half of them children....Perpetrated by militants linked to the separatist insurgency in the nearby republic of Chechnya.

I think people overestimate ethnic and religious loyalty. During the crusades, the Crusader states and the Muslim states would sometimes team up to take on Muslim powers in the region that were a mutual threat. Another example is France and the Ottoman empire’s alliance against Austria-Hungary in the 1600s.

Power is more concerned with sustaining itself than loyalty to country or ideology.

They’ve mostly been used for internal security operations but their loyalty is not in question. There’s already Chechen volunteers fighting for Ukraine by the way.

Magomed Tushayev, a Chechen, one of Ramzan Kadyrov’s top warlords, has been killed in action in Hostomel.
