Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged to remain in the capital even as Russian troops fought to enter Kyiv, Zelensky said, "The enemy identifies me as the number one target."
"They want to destroy Ukraine politically by destroying the head of state," Zelensky told Ukrainians in a video during early hours of Friday.
His family was the No. 2 target, he said, but also remained in Ukraine. "My family is not traitors, but citizens of Ukraine. But I have no right to say where they are now."
Zelensky said he was staying "with everyone who is needed for the work of the central government," hours after the Biden administration warned lawmakers that Kyiv could soon fall.
Russian forces pressed closer to the city Friday, waging a full-scale attack that Western officials said sought to topple Ukraine's government. Explosions jolted the city, air raid sirens blared and people shelterrd in deep subway stations. The Defense Ministry said there were "saboteurs" just miles from Kyiv's center.
In a video address, Zelensky called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to sit down for talks.
Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was ready to send a delegation to Minsk for talks, but made clear it still expected "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine.
Before the onslaught of tanks and troops, Putin had demanded Ukraine abandon any aspirations for joining NATO, give up all weapons and recognize Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014, as part of Russia.
NATO and Europe had left his country alone to defend itself. Zelensky added, warning that the sanctions by Western allies were not enough to stop the violence. He urged European governments to do more, from withdrawing ambassadors to imposing an oil embargo and airspace closures.

Putin is removing the Deep State Nazis from Ukraine. It is definitely a strategic operation. The Deep State has 11 biological labs in Ukraine where they are doing work similar to Wuhan. The last I heard, seven of those labs have been destroyed including a few along the Russian border.
Ukraine is a money laundering hub for the Deep State and the crooked politicians. That’s why they’re all crying out about this operation calling it an invasion and so on. FJB, Pelosi, Romney, and Kerry all have/ had their sons working for oil and gas companies there. Yet, none of them speak the language or have any experience in the oil and gas industry.
It’s hard to see how Putin is not a war criminal in a similar sense as Saddam Hussein
His claim that Ukraine is not a separate country but a part of Russia is similar to Saddam’s claim that Kuwait was not a separate country but the 56th province of Iraq, in both cases to justify invasion and conquest

He is brave. The logical thing for continuity of government would be to get out of the capital.
This guy is going to have statues around the world for centuries to come.
If he is smart he will relocate to Lviv and convince NATO to create a “no-fly zone” over Western Ukraine.
No sense getting Kiev destroyed and civilians killed needlessly.

Zelensky’s harshest opponents are now praising him. He could just save his skin, but he is putting his life on the line for his country.
Fortunately, few of us have to “rise to the occasion” like he does.
I do not believe Putin wants to assassinate or capture Zelensky. They need him to fill out some paper work.

I am curious - only just 10 days ago, and also prior to that - both Zelensky and his Defense Minister said that they see no imminent threat from Russia, castigated media for saying so, asked Biden to tone-down the war-hype, etc...
Now is country is invaded, he’s in a bunker, and he’s claiming he is a target of Russian troop surrounding Kiev

Oddly, Poroshenko (the prev. Uke president) also claims that he is target #1. At least one of them has to be mistaken....
Now, a bit of an update:
There are strong indications that the Kiev Junta is abandoning occupied DNR/LNR territory, the entrenched troops there are needed in Kiev (they actually have a good defense line in Donbass — DNR/LNR forces made minimal progress in the last two days breaching it). Two towns were surrendered to LNR today, Ukes withdrew.
