When the Soviet Union collapsed, there were literally millions of AKs warehoused all over the place.
This should have been done long ago.
Knowing they were walking into a country where the entire citizenry was armed with machine guns would have done much more than the threat of unnamed sanctions to deter Russia.

No surprise there - the Russians have been crap for decades. Our mil-industrial complex has portrayed them as the boogyman since WW2 to drain our substance.
As far are the mass issuing of weapons - makes absolute sense, when would be a better time? (Other than perhaps, last week)

If they are going to “defend their country,” they can’t do it this way. They are getting equipment from a few nations, but it’s too little, too late. They are outmanned, out ran, and outgunned. And it was the Russians that perfected retreat. There are two ways to play this game. Kill as many as you can before you become a casualty, or you can make the country worthless to Putin. Destroy all the natural gas and petroleum resources and burn anything useful to him and make it expensive to replace it. That was how they stopped Napoleon and raised hell with Hitler’s forces on the eastern front when both tried to follow the Russians as they regrouped. Putin is going to get control, so why kill people when the Russian troops decide not to enter but level the place with missiles anyway. They’ve already done a lot of that and it is a sound tactic.

They don’t want to see the return of teir children in body bags either. The Russian army is still largely a conscript force.
