Feds rescind license extension for Florida nuclear plant

MIAMI (AP) — Federal officials have reversed a decision to allow a South Florida nuclear power plant to continue running for another 30 years by ordering a new review of potential environmental risks, including those posed by climate change.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued an order Thursday to reverse a 2019 decision by a previous, Republican-led commission to extend Florida Power & Light’s operating license for two reactors at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant until 2052 and 2053, respectively. The reactors have been operating since 1972 and 1973, respectively.

The reversal gives environmental groups a chance to reiterate concerns that federal regulators didn’t adequately consider the risks of climate change and flooding from sea level rise when granting the last extension. The NRC plans to hold hearings after staff completes a new site-specific environmental impact statement.

Besides the reversal at Turkey Point, the NRC also reversed a license extension for the Peach Bottom nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. Days after taking office in January 2021, President Joe Biden named Democrats to take over the NRC and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The agencies have been reevaluating decisions made by Republican-led panels under former President Donald Trump, including the 2019 decision on Turkey Point.

Sounds good, but we both know that would never happen.

When our home electric bills jump up from charging, we’ll be made to ration electricity. You will be choosing between taking that vacation this summer or having no AC for a few weeks. You can’t have both in the brave new world.

Let’s notice by AP mentioning it was approved by a Republican led NRC and not stating instead it’s been halted by a Democrat led NRC, it gives the Dems cover. Their word choice throws shade on Republicans as being pro nuclear energy and furthers the Lefts political narrative they’re anti science, craven, greedy climate hating evil doers. Obviously Florida’s under assault because Gov Desantis is a target

“Campfires will not be allowed and the lumber industry will be completely abolished to protect the forests.”

I am afraid you are right, it will be the final blow. They really do want to wipe humans off the face of the earth with their irrational radical extremism.

I think they should set a good example and personally make the ultimate sacrifice and do their part to eliminate themselves right now.

You added that part. But yea, roughly a million charging at night, although it would take 3 reactors there to provide that power, considering the air conditioning use in Florida, and I don’t know if they have that many (other facilities do).

This Administration is doing everything it can to work against the America.

How can they legally do this?

Seems like they are violating their own law?

Hope the State files a lawsuit.

I lived in Miami in the 60s and dated an engineer from Bechtel who was building this.

Approximately nationwide to convert from gasoline powered vehicles to all EVs means we need 3000 new power plants and logistics are a nightmare. Even the math is horrendous

If they really believed in a Climate Crisis, they would want nuclear energy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to defend EVs, never have, never will. Where I am right now it’s 35 degrees and raining. I don’t want to have to unplug my car before going to work and if people are into that, more power to them.

I was just commenting on the power end - nukes provide a HUGE amount of power, far beyond anything that Leftists can comprehend. Germany’s learning that this week, as they see the shutdown of their nukes literally crippling them against Putin (which is actually a good thing, relatively speaking).

This would be the perfect moment to assert States’ Rights and ignore the NRC. The ongoing collapse of the COVID fraud would offer some excellent cover and outright support.

Okay, technically, he never wakes. But the effect is the same.

You are right. If we don’t use fossil fuels nuclear is the only other option. We’ve put dams in just about every place possible so that’s maxed out.

LG just gave up their solar panel plants so that leave China and the imaginary John Kerry Solar Panel Factory and European made wing generators for our power now. No more new oil exploration or leases. We will sell our coal to China and buy their solar panels and lithium batteries. And we are suppose to believe some useless sanctions will stop Russia, China and Iran when all they have to do is wait for a cold spell at night and they can wipe out our electrical capacity with a few acts of sabotage. Let’s go Biden. And if sea rise is such a bad deal build nuclear plants on Obama’s beach from mansions. Obviously sea rise won’t effect his houses.

***Fission is a dog. At best it is an intermediate solution to our energy needs, at worst a scheme which pollutes for 50,000 years. But having this tech get road-bumped by climate change bullsnot? Complete horse hockey.

Cold Fusion is 25 ORDERS of MAGNITUDE better bang for the buck than Controlled Hot Fusion (CHF).
