The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv is expected to fall to Russian forces within days and the country's resistance effectively crippled, US security officials fear.

Troops are already closing in on the seat of Ukrainian power after taking control of the strategic Chernobyl nuclear power plant today, and will seize it within 96 hours, bringing a 'new Iron Curtain' down on Europe, Volodymyr Zelensky warned.

Officials said Vladimir Putin plans to encircle Ukrainian forces in Kyiv and force them to either surrender or be destroyed, and the leadership of Ukraine will then fall in a week.

What would happen after that?

Occupying it in perpetuity would be maximum expenditure with minimum profit.

That makes no sense.

What would be the goal?

Bring Ukraine back into the Russian umbrella. It doesn’t have to be a full annexation, maybe just a puppet state. Pootie wants to reconstruct the old USSR and with Senile Joe at the helm its the perfect chance.

The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv

Since nobody seems able to agree on the spelling
I figure nobody ought to be able to find the place.

What’s really hilarious is that the stock market soared once Biden came out and ran up the white flag this afternoon.

This is how dumb they are out there:

“ Your foiled head will never understand the point. A lot of allied countried are imposing sanctions that will start to show results hopefully in the coming future. We need to cripple Russia from the inside. Biden was very clear and open on this”. - Senate Banana Republicans statement on Twitter

Ukraine is talking about rebuilding its nuclear capability now, but it’s far too late. They should have never given up that capability in the first place - placing trust on the US to expand NATO and risk American lives for a former Soviet province was always completely unrealistic, and the Bush/Clinton officials who persuaded Ukraine to give up its nukes bear a good deal of the responsibility for this week’s events.

What would be the goal?

It doesn’t...the Troops just can’t leave a few weeks after they install a puppet government , the people will overthrow it

he has to be an occupation

Putin has gone mad

So far day one of the Russian attack has not gone well for them. Control of the empty Chernobyl area is their main gain, but initial attacks on Sumy and Mariupol have been beaten back by the Ukrainians.

A lot depends on the battle for the airport near Kiev. If Ukraine retakes that it will wipe out several of Russia’s most elite units.

TBF a bunch of Freepers not more than a few days ago were lighting my for suggesting that the threat of a Russian invasion was a little more than just the imagination of warmongering Dems. Yes Joe is the reason for this war. But not through action but inaction.

So they are not touching Russian oil or gas?

Putin can sell it at these high prices?

At some point Putin is going to do what he wants in the face of feckless Western nations but I firmly believe that history will show that this was a war that was very avoidable and much blame lies with the corrupt Ukrainian government as well as the green movement (Russia is driven by energy prices) and Western leadership. In fact, our own state department should bear much of the blame too and I wish more people understood how/why.

I don’t see any winners in this but I do see a lot of villians all around and its certainly not the Ukrainians or even the young men wearing Russian uniforms on the opposite side.

Ukraine was the breadbasket of the former Soviet Union. It will probably be breadbasket of the Soviet Union 2.0

Recents reports are Ukraine has retaken that airport

but from I read it was a Risky move just to speed things up by paratroopers

The “big phase” not at Kyiv yet

Germany is going to keep buying Russian gas. There’s a report that they are making a purchase tomorrow. Who knows when/how they’ll take delivery.
