If you try to analyze Putin, using the Cold War Playbook, you’ll miss the mark.

How so? This stuff is straight out of the Soviet playbook. Fake wars, hardcore gaslighting, murder and intimidation, invitation from Quisling fellow travelers to invade, etc., etc. We’ve seen this movie before.

We either should have been much more helpful to Russia rebuilding their economy and including them in world security.

Precisely what Reagan advocated, basically a Marshall Plan for Russia, but the Bushies and Clintons just wanted to rub the Russians' noses in it.

Yep, reports are that Putin has gone full Howard Hughes during Covid. He doesn’t leave home, and only a few people a day are allowed to see him after they endure a full disinfection routine.

I believe everything I read in the MSM about Russia and Putin, and you should too! Remember when he was hand-in-glove with Trump to steal the 2016 election?

Oh, wait....

Oh, yeah, that never happened, did it?

But, I'm sure their right about their Putin = Howard Hughes claim.

Did you watch the speech? Did Putin seem like someone in control of his faculties?

"In view of the historical destiny of Russia and its peoples, the Leninist principles of state-building were not only a mistake, but far worse than a mistake. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991 this became absolutely obvious.

Of course, the events of the past cannot be changed, but we must at least speak about them directly and honestly, without reservations and without political coloration. I can only add that the considerations of the current political conjuncture, however spectacular and advantageous they may seem at a given moment, should not or cannot under any circumstances form the basis for the fundamental principles of statehood.

This is neither the time nor the place to discuss issues of state or constitutional law and to define the concept of citizenship. Nevertheless, the question arises: why did the country have to be shaken even further under these already difficult circumstances?"

I mean, Putin is saying out loud, 'You have no 'state', you have no 'citizenship' -- other than what I grant you -- so, I'm going to Kiev'.

Just activate the sleeper in his inner circle and be done with it.

He clearly is more fond of the old Czar Russia than Bolshevik USSR

That is the real import of what he said. He would roll Ukraine back to the pre-Soviet borders. The Donbass was part of Russia proper back then. He can also make a deal with the Polish and give them back L'vov. That would be a NATO breaker.

I completely agree with Putin and, as a former CIA officer, who worked overseas and directly opposed communist Russia, I think the West’s approach to post Soviet Russia borders on lunacy.

Russia should be one of our top allies at this point in time.

Most of our points of conflict would disappear if we would quit pissing on them.

Contrast and compare this speech with any of Biden’s.

Facts, history, and logic vs bumbling, contradictions and non-sequiturs.

Agree.

People should carefully read Putin’s entire speech before commenting.

They may learn a little about the current crisis and its historical evolution.

You are painfully ill informed.

Or maybe you are 90 plus years old and suffering from cognitive decline?

The fact that eastern Ukraine was until recently part of Russia and is populated by Russians who have voted repeatedly and with huge majorities that they want to rejoin Russia means nothing?

Muh Russia muh Russia muh Russia - let’s start WWIII because we are ignorant fools with zero historical context.

Yes. I watched some excerpts. He seemed normal, articulate, crisp.

Thank you for reminding me of that. I remember it, now, and it’s an excellent point about Reagan’s attempt to have a healthy Russia grow out of its bad, recent past.

Not true. Ukrainians are the majority in eastern Ukraine and every poll showed that the majority of residents wanted to be part of Ukraine. Russians were a majority only in Crimea.

According to a 2001 census, ethnic Ukrainians make up 56.9% of the total population of Donbas as a whole with ethnic Russians making up the largest minority, making up 38.2% of the total population of Donbas

Exactly. Putin as Howard Hughes looks way too much like a corrupt CIA plant story fed directly to the NYTimes and WaPo. Pfffft...

We wondered when the last of the Hard Line former Soviets would go insane seeing their empire crumble to western media and western banking. All the wealth of the bear is sitting in real estate around the world.

Russia really is in a box, not many directions to go. The states that have not joined NATO are more interested than they have been in 30 years. It seems we are months away from Russias BOOMERinksky moment. Putin will shake the markets and make lots of noise, 85% of ukraine will be allowed into NATO with open arms, 15% as a tax to the last non asian big C Communist. Whatever deals the bidens had in the 2010s, all the paperwork will be gone as of course he will be Ukraines Savor.
