WASHINGTON — Visiting Kyiv in early 2008, then-President George W. Bush told Ukrainian leader Viktor Yushchenko that it was time that the Eastern European nation join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, a military alliance between the United States and European nations meant to serve as a bulwark against the Soviet Union and, after communism’s collapse, Russia.
“Helping Ukraine move toward a NATO membership,” Bush said, “is in the interest of every member in the alliance and will help advance security and freedom in this region and around the world.”
Fourteen years later, Ukraine remains outside the alliance. And President Biden said on Friday that he was “convinced” that Putin has decided to invade Ukraine. With war looming, the issue of NATO membership has emerged as a complex one for President Biden and his European allies. Experts are divided on whether NATO creep into Eastern Europe is central to Russia’s concerns — and how those concerns should be treated by the United States.

It's always been on the table. And it's still the goal of neocons.
I somewhat remember those talks then the subject just dropped.
Kill the Russian Invaders!
The US/NATO put it in writing for the dumbass Putin.
Your absurd demands are rejected.
This is why Pooty is Pouty, with his tanks encircling Ukraine.
He is going to get a favor large EU surprise when he invades, with the Russian economy and people taking the hit for Pouty.
Is it wrong to see this situation as a mirror image of the Cuban missile crisis?
“Cuban missile crisis”
It’s the closest analogy we have.
But to a neocon, Russia has no right to expect or demand anything.
Only destruction.
I detect a New World Odor.
“Is it wrong to see this situation as a mirror image of the Cuban missile crisis?”
Yes it is similar as in 1961 the USA tried to invade Cuba, forcing the Cubans to look for protection.
Russia keeps invading its neighbors. Georgia joined the CSTO, the Russian rival to NATO, but that didn’t protect them from Putin attacking.
With Russia threatening invasion of all its neighbors, it makes perfect sense that they would turn to the USA for protection.
The U S has zero interests in Ukraine joining NATO.
Russia has several in Ukraine NOT joining. Access to the Black Sea , their only winter port I think.
NATO troops, equipment, missile on their doorstep. Would we stand for Russian troops in Tiajuana? Ciudad Juarez?
Every failed neocon war for the last 60 years results in a flood of refugees into the USA afterwards
I can’t believe they are planning a flood of Ukraine White Slavs into the USA. That just doesn’t comport with present demographic replacement plans
As such, I expect them to set up Ukrainians and Russians to simply kill each other.
You'll have to come out of your mom's basement first, cowboy.
Op-Ed: Russia’s got a point: The U.S. broke a NATO promise

Because they saw value and the CIA got involved.
What we’re seeing now is the long game. Whether or not the Bidens were set up to take the fall is arguable, but considering their choice of emissary (crackhead Hunter) the intended result does appear to be a renewed Cold War with Russia.
Everybody loses when rads are spiking. But with a failing & flailing administration in control, I suggest having a plan for when the lights go out and don’t come back on (Russia is not the only threat in this respect).
100% agree.
Biden= weak liberalism. Putin= Strong Communism.
The difference is that the USA is not invading Mexico, nor is the USA putting troops in a USA sponsored Republic of Tijuana
