Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing tough opposition in Parliament as he battles to maintain his emergency powers in a crackdown on Freedom Convoy protesters.
On Thursday, legislation upholding Trudeau's declaration under the Emergencies Act was presented in Parliament, where Conservative and Bloc Québécois MPs voiced fierce opposition.
However, the left-leaning New Democrats said they would reluctantly support Trudeau's minority Liberal government, virtually ensuring passage of the measure upholding his emergency powers in the House of Commons. Together the two parties hold 184 seats out of 338 in the lower chamber.
Under law, any use of the Emergencies Act must be brought before Parliament within seven days for approval.
Debate began Thursday and will continue, according to the Act, 'without interruption' until the vote is called, which is expected to occur as soon as Friday. Canada's largely ceremonial Senate will also consider the matter on Friday.
As debate raged in Parliament, police poured into downtown Ottawa on Thursday in what truckers feared was a prelude to a crackdown on their protest over vaccine mandates, which has paralyzed the streets of the capital for nearly three weeks.
Ottawa's Interim Police Chief Steve Bell said at a press conference on Thursday that checkpoints are being established to lock down the city's core and prevent additional protesters from joining the demonstration. He said protesters currently camped out at the demonstration are free to leave, and encouraged them to do so.
Addressing the House, Trudeau pleaded with legislators to support his extraordinary powers, which have enabled him to summarily freeze bank accounts and crypto wallets tied to the protests in a bid to cut off funding for the movement.

You know not of what you speak.
The conservative vote is inefficient, but things are not particularly Gerrymandered against the conservatives, and the elections are far, far cleaner than most in the U.S.
The conservative leader nominating process is gamed, or at least has been, and the other parties aren’t that open to allowing dissenting voices, but that is not the same thing as corrupt elections.
Any links to live vloggers showing the police crackdown?
A better quote right now would be,
“the wise man knows the line between courage and stupidity”
(can’t fight the whole State with no support)
The fences are a setup, a prop in the coming crackdown.
When it comes, police will form a skirmish line forcing the crowd back into the newly built fence. Maybe the police will intentionally aggravate the situation to create a combination of fear and anger.
The media will be there to photograph the entire thing. They will say the crowd was trying to breach the fence, to press onto Parliament. It will be the Canadian J6
Truckers should leave Ottawa and never come back. Starve the government out! Just leave it an economic desert.
# If the police are really doing this, they better hope to God that Justin Auschwitz-Trudeau wins this fight. Because if he doesn’t they all need to find new jobs.
So far I have found little evidence that police the world over have any significant proportion of people in them not willing to be jackboots for anyone in power
They would be afraid truckers’ friends would come after them.
That would be enough.
I don’t know haven’t looked.
It only takes about 16 if the Bloc and PC are united—I suspect a few liberals may also break rank if enough of the NDP is willing to. Any idea how the Greens and the independent (I think there is one—Sloan???) line up?
I am assuming that this would count as a confidence motion.
I agree wholeheartedly and absolutely. What I found "unlikely" in Fai Mao's post was the idea that any RCMP or other law enforcement officers will lose their jobs over due to their actions in the "state of emergency" debacle.
The cops are forming rugby scrums and arresting selected individuals.
I was watching live on the CBC.
Protestors are not getting in the way of police. They just cheer on. They have civil disobedience down pat.......so far.
But this weekend, there will be thousands of Canadians going to Ottawa. Things may change from civil to uncivil, We will see, The plan is that the police will remove all the 18 wheelers by Monday end.
Its sad to see this Emergency Act being enacted by these Liberal and NDP tyrants who would not so much as talk to these potestors. They act like the old British Raj of India.
Half of Canada is really angry.
“get out now!!”

“canuck_conservative” has always seemed on the side of the deep state mandaters in his comments here.
On the contrary, I supported the Truckers from the beginning ... they passed just a few miles from my house on Day 2 (Calgary)
I’ve also been saying since 2014 Trudeau was no leader and basically a disaster-in-waiting
but let’s get real here ... they’re in for a lot of hurt if they keep going ... I don’t want to see that, they’re nice people who got slandered from the start

I guess you don’t see it but you give out mixed messages.
So what do you want? To see them go down in a hail of gunfire?
Then you’ll be satisfied?
Trudeau wants to destroy them, and now he has the tools to do it ... being suicidal is stupid
