JUST IN: Navy Must Look to Allies to Match China’s Shipbuilding Speed

To match the breakneck speed of China’s shipbuilding programs, the Navy will need to work more closely with allied nations to leverage some of their ship designs and reduce risk, said one service official Feb. 10.

If “you look at China and how they are manufacturing ships and the rate of manufacturing ships, we're going to have a hard time … to keep up at a pace,” said Tom Rivers, executive director for amphibious, auxiliary and sealift programs at Naval Sea System Command’s program executive office for ships.

Military officials have for years been sounding the alarm about China’s naval buildup, with the People’s Liberation Army Navy building a formidable fleet.

To combat China’s growth, the Navy must do a better job of leveraging the ship designs of allied nations and bringing them to the United States to be domestically produced, Rivers said during the National Defense Industrial Association’s annual Expeditionary Warfare Conference, which was held virtually.

“We need to look at some of the same type of ships that may be in common and see what we can leverage for speed purposes and for interoperability,” he said.

While Rivers said he didn't have any particular foreign vessel in mind, there are good designs around the globe that the Navy could potentially leverage.

“What I'm interested in doing is as we go forward with different programs, is seeing what is out there that we can leverage to reduce our risk in initial production,” he said. “I think we would definitely be … doing all the manufacturing domestically, and then we also obviously have requirements to Buy American, buy a lot of parts domestically.”

Definitely helps we’re sending all our scrap iron to the Chicoms to build ships out of.

when a country can ship every ship in an enemies navy from a 1,000 miles away with the click of a button. I am not sure how important they are anymore.

I’ll bet no one can match the speed in which the US built ships during WWII.

Our Navy is way behind what it should be, due in large part to 8 years of neglect under Obama and civilian resistance during the Trump administration. The number of shipbuilding facilities is inadequate. China clearly is bent on becoming the dominant maritime power, and if they get there it will be bad news for every one else.

While I prefer the US build at a pace that allows capacity to remain at 15 combat vessels per year, I have to admit there are some mighty fine Frigate and Destroyer platforms being produced by our allies in Western Europe and North Asia.

First rate stuff that could be outfitted with US weapons and electronics.

Because we risk being behind the curve, the west now needs to build no less than 20 warships per year for the next dozen years at least.

And we know our supposed allies won’t do what is needed to survive perhaps we SHOULD spend $200 bil or so to contract a ship at every shipyard in the west with capacity.

Hell, give ‘em a 5 year contract for 3 of each.

After all, it’s not real money anymore so we can afford it.

I finished HS the year WWII ended so I do remember. Even our small town built ships - mine-sweepers. Liberty cargo ships were mass produced.

The average time for a Kaiser built Liberty ship was 50 days. SS Peary was a propaganda show. Her components were prefabricated and laid out for that one specific construction project.

If we were worried about China’s growth we wouldn’t be buying all our crap from them.

That was the first thing that came to my mind, too.

What the HELL? We can’t produce ships fast enough? We can’t make manufacturable, high-performance designs and have to license designs from other countries?

Do the Navy and its contractors have too many WOKE personnel? Too many taking Remedial CRT training? Naval architects and engineers who can’t solve 2 + 2?

This is a BAD scenario.

The United States is about to get a wakeup call. The U.S. powers know it and are preparing for it in their small realm. This is a democracy though, and voters are selfishly grabbing all they can get.

There’s going to be a reckoning, and it’s not that far away.

My grandma and pop built ships in Philly during that time. I think he put the electrical wiring in the Princeton. Before he was old enough to sneak in the service.

When the country puts its mind to things. Things get done. Better. Shouldn’t take a war though.

This is a question you should ask the President of the United States and the Congress of the United States. They are the ones that hold the answer to the question of warship building.

The US needs to offset Chinese and Russian shipbuilding capabilities, and their allies.

Problem one. The tree huggers won’t let us build. Two. The tree hugging democrats won’t let us build. Three. We don’t mine the ores and produce the steel we need in sufficiently quantities thanks to the democrats and tree huggers. Four. The democrats and tree huggers WANT us to lose.

I agree. We have all kinds of sanctions planned for Russia, but scant little for China. It is shameful.
