Ukraine’s ambassador to Britain has told @bbc5live Nolan show that his country might contemplate withdrawing its objective of joining NATO
We should NOT let them join.
Threats work well in the land of Rus. As I was reading about Soviet influence the other day and it may be “Finlandization” is a buzzword again with Ukraine policy flipping. However, to ensure this will not be an issue, Ukraine needs to be a oblast again by Putin’s standards.
That is exactly what I meant. Chamberlain has brought “peace” and Russia has everything they want. They have their gas pipeline, too, already.
Russia sure is a big winner, now that that colluding Trump is gone. 🤪
This went on during the time of the Czars, did we care about it then?
I was hoping they would take our place in NATO.
This is hugh and series
In a good way
Bullcrap. 100%. There would have been no threatened invasion under Trump.
Let’s deal with reality. We went from a country working toward NATO membership under Trump, which will now be occupied by Russian troops under Biden.
That’s the reality of what’s happening and all the couch potatoes telling us how this is just fine and inevitable because Russia owns Ukraine, are talking out of their butts.
Anything else ensures their incineration.
This will last long enough until Putin starts whining about the Baltics.
“The only difference between Trump and Biden on this, is that under Trump, the crisis would never have arisen in the first place. Whereas under Biden, the Neocons likely made moves on Ukraine, which necessitated a loud objection from Russia.”
Absolutely correct.
Oops, left out this: If something like this is really on the table, the 30,000 Russian troops part is just talk. “We Ukrainians decided to be neutral ourselves, and no Russian troops!” Putin doesn’t really want the troops there — a guarantee Ukraine will not join NATO is what he truly wants. The Ukrainian leadership can’t appear to have “caved to Russian aggression” so the amendment + no Russian troops fixes that.
There is the little problem of all the arms we’re giving them, though. And then there’s the Minsk Agreement the Ukrainians refuse to implement. This last isn’t that much of an issue, though. (Although it would become an issue if Ukraine attacks again.)
Anyway, your posting this really caught my eye, as I have been thinking for some time the easiest way out of the mess there would be for Ukraine to amend their constitution thusly. Stand up and take the matter into their own hands. As it is, Ukraine is being torn apart like a ragdoll between squabbling children. Vickie Nuland yanking one arm, while Putin holds fast to the other. If they did this, I would say they’ve grown up a lot as a nation. (Ukraine had never been its very own country before. Such countries often have terrible growing pains, especially when their is outside interference.)
Again, I have been thinking it, but never thought I’d see that idea in print.
If neutrality is good enough for Austria, why not Ukraine?
Agree that the US behaved poorly. But the Ukraine is really outside of the sphere of US interests. Period.
“We went from a country working toward NATO membership under Trump”
Trump, never once, advocated for Ukraine to join NATO.
And no way he would have agreed.
“Ukraine would also pass a constitutional amendment forcing it to be a permanently neutral country and to cut all links with NATO.”
Brilliant!!!!
Oh man, War, Inc. is going to faint.
Vindman will stomp his feet.
