There’s probably some truth in that. I’ve not been able to
follow the activity closely enough to know.

There are always scalpers and other folks out there
hustling. I’ve seen that over the years.

“Why do you think L.A. went for 20 years with NO team?”

Not being a fan (obviously), I didn’t even realize that. Maybe coming back to me a bit now.

I grew up watching Jon (no “h”) Arnett (no “e”) play at USC and with the Rams. Number 26. When we played backyard football when I was a kid I was always Jon Arnett (or so I liked to think).

Many many years ago our family used to race horses at Hollywood Park. IMHO it couldn’t compare to Santa Anita.

When the teams leave for greener pastures, I wonder who will pick up the tab?

He k. They probably herd a bunch of unvaccinated folks in there and shoot ‘em for sport.

“Does the author address the fact why they built the stadium there? I’d be curious to know if it was because the place was such a disaster and the land was very cheap.”

There’s a clue in the sentence “the first thing people see when they fly into LAX.

The first thing you hear, and the second, and the 102nd, if you live in that part of Inglewood, around Century Boulevard, all day and all night, is jets coming in to land.

When I lived there in the 80s, just before and then during the crack epidemic, which in LA they called “rock”, not “crack”, it was my understanding that part of what led to Inglewood’s decline was that a fair sized swath of Inglewood is on the LAX flight path, an area that people who could afford to, moved away from, during the transition to bigger and bigger jets, and more of them.

I used to get my car washed just across the street south of the race track, at Century (which is so named because it is between 99th and 101st streets) and Crenshaw, which is the intersection mentioned in the beginning of the movie “Boys in the Hood.”. The 747s, particularly, looked massive when they’d come over low, with their gear already down.

Also the first Lethal Weapon movie, where they blow up the house at 111th and Larch, which was the real address, that was Inglewood or possible unincorporated Lennox which is adjacent. Inglewood has many streets named after trees, Arbor Vitae being one of the bigger ones. You can see a DC 10 coming in from the right to the left, descending into LAX, just when the house blows up.

They were able to blow up a house there because the whole east-west strip near Imperial Highway was about to become Interstate 105, and the land had already been taken.

BTW the big Randy’s donut is fiberglass, not steel. There are two others to the east I remember. According to Wikipedia there are two more further from Inglewood.

The NFL should have had a halftime show dedicated to John Madden

I don't know but if I had to guess the halftime show will be moron music.

It's moron, but I wouldn't call it "music".

I didn’t realize until reading a story this week that the NFL contracted the halftime show to JayZ (Shawn Carter) three years ago. So no more white peeps on the halftime.

LOL

Traditional Jews have surrendered and arranged for a religious Jewish themed halftime show. G-rated, of course.

“...Inglewood attractive to outside development.” Yes, Inglewood is nice. The 40% blacks and 50% hispanics are today struggling to learn what the whites learned in 1900. The parents that I have talked to recently are sick of the corruption and do their best to keep the crime down, the streets clean and the businesses open. Young people should be super thankful to live in Inglewood and next to the Toy District, Jewelry District, Flower District, Fashion District, etc., etc. No excuse to be poor and lazy in Inglewood. Thankfully, the drivers parking at the Super Bowl will be safe. Nice church: https://stjohnchrysostomparish.org

“The NFL should have had a halftime show dedicated to John Madden anything less is inexcusable.”

Despite Ukraine, Trucker Strikes, Inflation, a mentally incapacitated President and COVID that is the best post of the day. Used to be a big NFL fan woke up one day after the Cowboys had several drug arrests an asked myself why am I spending time on this. Now just watch the SuperBowl for the ads, and maybe some good football. Some years halftime show but not this year for me not into HipHop.

Loved Del Mar. Very unique. Beach in the morning horses in the afternoon.

Can’t get any better than that.

Exactly. I lived in Inglewood in the early 60’s and then 1969 to 1977. You are right. The name was changing to Inglewatts.
