BEIJING (AP) — Erin Jackson became the first Black woman to win a speedskating medal at the Winter Olympics.
A gold one, at that.
Jackson won the 500 meters Sunday with a time of 37.04 seconds, giving the American speedskating program its first medal of the Beijing Games and first individual medal since 2010.
But this one meant much more than national pride.
The 29-year-old Jackson, a former inline skater who switched to the ice shortly before the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, joined fellow American Shani Davis as the only Black athletes to win long-track speedskating medals at the Olympics.
Now, she wants others to follow their path.
“Hopefully, this has an effect,” Jackson said. “Hopefully, we’ll see more minorities, especially in the USA, getting out and trying these winter sports.”

Detroit area speed skating in those days was mostly outside and a good friend of mine, his wife and her two sisters were competitive skaters since the rink was right by their houses.
Yes, and kudos to her! I don’t even mind her comments about getting more blacks into winter sports. That’s fine. I just don’t really care about her ethnic background in this context. Not trying to deny her a voice, just sayin.’
Nice!
It will only cease to be a news item when people quit talking about it. Unfortunately, too many people think that skin color defines a person. I call these people racists. And the vast majority are Democrats.
Yes!
My last manager had black skin, but he refused to be called “African American.” He was an American…period.
I’m not going to hate somebody because of one comment they made. The whole country is talking about race all the time, so it’s natural that she’d be asked about it and make the response she did.
Hey, she skated for America....
...and she honored the American flag in her victory lap.
Unlike the little commie lover Eileen Gu, who is skiing for Communist freaking China.
An actual sport.
Traitor Barbie “won” a skiing gold medal based on judges scores.
From the article: “Jackson grabbed an American flag and did a victory lap around the Ice Ribbon oval, the stars and stripes fluttering above her head.”
It also stated that Brittany Bowe gave up her spot in this event so Erin could compete. As it turned out, a spot opened up so both could be in the race. They are close friends who are both from Ocala, Florida.
Jackson said: “She made a really big sacrifice for me. I’ll be grateful to her forever.” After the race, she said: “(Bowe) hugged me and we cried. She said she’s really proud of me and I said a lot of thank yous.”
Unlike the little commie lover Eileen Gu, who is skiing for Communist freaking China.
She’s skating for China to lift up all the little Chinese girls, showing them what they could accomplish if only they tried real hard. At the same time the Chicoms are beating down on a female Chinese tennis star. Oh, the irony!
Yes, I am down on all subjective scoring based on judgement of judges/referees. I don’t like calls for “holding” in football, or “pass interference”. Each referee has his own standard.
Ocala also has the “The Villages” I think.
The Villages have quite a reputation (not on the good side).
We what does she want, a medal?

that should be “What does she want, a medal?
No hate here!
You have your priorities in order.
Great!
Congrats...
I wish American women would dominate international golf, like American male golfers do. The South Korean and Thai women, while smaller in stature, are dominating the LPGA.
Korean girls can leave school in eight grade and go to work at golf!
