The Russian military said today it caught a US submarine in its far-east waters and drove it out with 'appropriate means' after the vessel ignored a Russian request to leave, Interfax news agency has reported.
The encounter came as Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden held a high-stakes phone call, as a tense world watched and worried that a Russian invasion of Ukraine could begin as soon as Wednesday.
Biden warned his Kremlin counterpart that the United States 'will respond decisively and impose swift and severe costs on Russia' should it invade Ukraine.

We don't have large units like that in Ukraine. We've had troops training in there on various rotations for more than half a decade, and those are the ones that are being yanked.

There has been a long term training relationship between the U.S. and the Ukraine. This is similar to relationships we have with dozens of countries. Most often we do mutual training through the National Guard State Partnership Program.
Under this program, a State will routinely, 1-3 times a year, send Army or Air National Guard units, generally company size (100-150 troops) or smaller to the same partner country. It’s a low-cost way to provide training for the Guard, and the Guard units get information about other countries as they train with their soldiers and airmen.
The units may be combat units, but the mission is strictly training.
Putin’s first expedition into Ukraine succeeded because he had both tactical and strategic surprise. It was almost over as soon as the world learned about it. And if it didn’t take the US by surprise, the Obama administration said nothing about it during Putin’s run-up. (Allowing it to happen.) In a week, the Crimea and parts of the Donbase were under Russian control.
