When former Bay Area resident Terry Gilliam, 62, started the Facebook group “Leaving California” in 2018, the group attracted 200 members within six months. Four years later, the group has over 50,000 members, and the number continues to climb every week.

And yet, home prices are skyrocketing. Plenty of wealthy people still want to live in the better parts of Los Angeles.
Then, why haven’t the home prices in California dropped like a rock?
They will continue to vote for what they fled.
Actually housing in California is surprisingly affordable. The cheapest housing is a tent, and even better, you can set it up on prime real estate, save for a few places where liberals live.
My new California neighbor (DFW) paid exactly double what the house next door was listed at in 2017, when it sat on the market unsold for over 1 year.
When I see him at his mailbox, he always complains about “the bills”.
Thanks for making my property tax double, dude. Enjoy those bills.
Foreclosures in California are rising sharply. I imagine the housing bubble will pop soon.
Chinese can buy US houses. A condo in downtown Being is $29 million, but A $12 million mansion in LA has more status.
bttt
Don’t come to Virginia.. we have copperheads here and they’re waiting at the border to chew your appendages off. Plus, we’re all racists for electing Youngkin.
I moved from Portland to a Seattle suburb recently. Came across a couple renting out their house so they can move to San Francisco and they said the competition for places to live is huge. I can only think they don’t yet know how awful it is there...day after day of crazy people, filth, crime.
Another person left a nice area in Seattle to move to CA because of the weather.
sounds like socialism
super rich and super poor
no middle class
Americans are leaving California. But immigrants are moving to California.
Well leave your s%!t hole politics behind
Don’t come to Florida either. The state is full of gators who will eat your pets, pythons who will kill your pets, fire ants whose bites will infect and itch like crazy, and it is hot and humid for 9 months of the year.
Immigrants are used to crime and high taxes.
“I can only think they don’t yet know how awful it is there...day after day of crazy people, filth, crime.”
I’ve lived in and around both. If you took two huge scoops one night, scooped up Seattle and San Francisco, and changed them, nobody would know the difference. Both are high crime, high cost, homeless loaded, drug infested, and he politicians don’t care to try to stop it. Take you choice, you’re looking at yourself in a mirror.
And you think you improved from Portland? A true city trifecta.

Chinese investors.
Two examples:
1. There are at least a dozen new high rise apartment buildings going up in Downtown Los Angeles, ALL financed by China with a majority of the units already purchased by Chinese nationals;
2. Single family homes in Southern California are selling for 10%-20% above asking price and being paid for in CASH, by Chinese nationals.
The suburban housing market has been like this since at least 2000, even after the housing bubble burst. To wit, in 2012 when my then wife and I were preparing to sell our home in northeast LA county and move closer to our jobs in south LA county, we had no problem selling our home for 10% more than the asking price (paid in cash by a woman from China) but we DID have a problem buying another home with the cash from our home sale (our offer was 10% above asking price), becaus Chinese investors would come in and outbid us at 20% above asking price. We had to rent for a year before we were finally able to find a home that suited us at a price we could afford without being outbid by some damn Chinese national or investment firm.
