Russia-Ukraine tensions threaten Europe's oil supply, reigniting debate over Biden's climate agenda

The specter of a military confrontation on the Ukrainian border is stoking fears in Europe of an interruption in natural gas from Russia -- and pumping fresh life into the debate over whether President Joe Biden's climate agenda is brushing up against difficult geopolitical realities.

Critics of the Biden administration say its efforts to curb domestic oil and gas production have complicated its ability to negotiate with Russia, which provides more than a third of Europe's natural gas.

To others, the standoff demonstrates the need for a swift transition to clean energy, "so that we're not held hostage by Russia moving forward," says Erin Sikorsky, director of the Center for Climate and Security and a former intelligence official.

Either way, experts say, the conflict in Eastern Europe is shining a spotlight on the challenges ahead as governments adapt to an evolving energy landscape.

"It is clear that climate change is a huge focus for the Biden White House," said Ben Cahill, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "But energy security realities are intervening, and they can't be ignored."

Because Russia's economy relies so heavily on natural gas exports to Europe, Biden and European allies still have substantial energy-related leverage in negotiations with Moscow. The Russian government generated almost 30% of state revenue in 2020 from fossil fuel companies, including $40 billion in gas sales to Europe, according to one U.S. government report.

Actually, I think it’s Putin who has the leverage. Russia can do without the cash more than Europe can do without the energy.

Very true but thankfully they can’t destroy the oil. Only not produce it until a legitimate and real potus returns

Who is relying on who more?

Would it be easier for Russia to find a new customer for it's gas, or would it be easier for the European countries to find another source of fuel? Perhaps it would hurt both, but who would hurt more?

I don't know the answer.

Specter? Arlen. Is that you?

Democrat. Then Republican. Then Democrat again. Voted "no" on paying down the national debt.

the need for a swift transition to clean energy, "so that we're not held hostage by Russia moving forward,"

If Putin has designs of Ukraine, I don't think he'll wait 50 years.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but let's see some analysis to your conclusion.

Invasion is gonna happen.

They have 5 amphibious ships loaded with Marines off the coast, and 6 more amphibious ships loaded with Marines just transited in to the Black Sea in the past day or 2.

Their current naval presence in that area is unmatched in recent times, having moved assets from the Baltic, Pacific, and Arctic fleets.

They have Ukraine surrounded on 3 sides and stretched thin. They will be outside of Kiev within 48 hours to install a puppet govt.

Another sign - Putin’s personal Mega yacht just left Germany in the middle of upgrades/repairs (left unfinished).

He’s anticipating sanctions.

Four years of Russia Russia Russia and it was all to install the weak Biden.

There isn’t going to be a war. Nothing about this is worth the risk of starting a war or provoking Americans into replacing incompetents like Biden with incompetent leaders. Putin is just prodding to see how far he can push the West.

He would be taking a huge risk invading a country of 40 million, no matter how weak the west’s response, he would have to occupy territory, a bloody nightmare.

This isn’t about war, it’s about money and Putin is getting his money by manipulating fuel costs, crude hit 93.00 a barrel today, that’s the real goal😂

If petroleum supplies are interrupted it should be considered a good thing. There will be less carbon dioxide being emitted. They can’t make up their minds.

Our PC weakened military will get their hats handed to them in short order.

They’ll also have all the goods on Biden once they’ve invaded - leading to further damage to our nation when they spill it and he and his criminal family are arrested for treason.

Long 3 years ahead...
