JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A Democratic state lawmaker has announced her bid for the U.S. Senate seat in Alaska held by Republican Lisa Murkowski.
State Sen. Elvi Gray-Jackson, a former Anchorage Assembly member in her first term in the Alaska Legislature, filed candidacy papers with the Alaska Division of Elections on Thursday. Gray-Jackson is the first Democrat to join a field of contenders that also includes Republican Kelly Tshibaka, who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump and state Republican party leaders. Murkowski is seeking reelection.
Gray-Jackson, in a statement, said Alaskans “need a leader who will truly work to be the bridge between the opposite sides of the aisle.”
She became emotional speaking with reporters about her decision to run. She said public service is her passion.
She cited support for abortion rights and voting rights and concerns with issues related to health care and the economy. She said health care costs are unaffordable and that workers “need living wages.”
Gray-Jackson said she enjoys “helping Alaskans navigate through government, helping them work through drainage issues and potholes.” She said she responds to emails she receives personally, and “my constituents know that when they write to me that they're going to hear from me.”
She said she intends to continue serving out her term in the state Senate while making her run. She was elected to the Alaska Senate in 2018.
An election system, adopted by Alaska voters in 2020, will be used for the first time in this year's elections. It ends party primaries — meaning all candidates will appear on one ballot, with the top four vote-getters in the primary, regardless of party affiliation, advancing to the general election. Ranked choice voting will be used in the general election.

Total left-winger. She would be a disaster for Alaska and America.
She can’t win but we need a democrat in the race cause that’s the only way there’s a chance Murkowski is not in the final 2.
An emotional left-wing hack. What could go wrong?
Scurry back to your hideout woman.
Another Democrat from the Star Wars bar scene.
I think you are on to something, there... my guess is she will be paid handsomely to exit or stop campaigning at an appropriate time to get the deep state devil across the line... Murkowski is already owned by the swamp.
“She can’t win but we need a democrat in the race cause that’s the only way there’s a chance Murkowski is not in the final 2.”
Yep, things will now get more interesting.
Yes. Exactly
Wasn’t she in ‘Demolition Man’ with Stallone?
She has a lizard look, too-like one of the Klingons in “Star Trek-Into Darkness”-same haircut, flat eyes, etc-just add some facial hardware, uniform, hand her a phaser-scary looking...
Just what we need... Another blithering moronic Karen in the Senate...
And her policy positions differ from RINO Murky... how?
I agree its a plus having this moonbat in the race to energize the RAT base though, since it will help prevent them from crossing over to "help" Murky.
Murkowski is almost guaranteed to win in this scheme, UNLESS conservatives refuse to rank her as a fallback choice, in which case someone like this lefty nutjob could slip through.
She’s running as the second and third choice candidate - she could end up winning in a massive landslide even if only a very small portion of the electorate votes for her as their first choice.
No it won't - since they could make her their second or third choice.
Sounds like this idiotic “ranked candidate preference” system means that AK conservatives will have to rank Murk DEAD LAST on their ballot (even ranking the moonbat RAT and a white supremacist loon ahead of her) if they want to have a chance of stopping her from making the runoff, and preventing her re-election.
Assuming all these candidates get on the ballot, you’d rank them in order somewhere along these lines:
1. Kelly Tshibaka (R)
2. Karl Speights (R)
3. Sam Little (R)
4. Dustin Darden (AKIP)
5. Sean Thorne (L)
6. Al Gross (I)
7. Elvi Gray-Jackson (D)
8. John Schiess (”R”, actually a white supremacist wacko)
9. Lisa Murkowski (R)
Theoretically doable, but hard to convince ANYONE to vote that way and an incredibly dumb system.
I know this horsecrap is confusing, let me explain it as I hopefully correctly understand it.
The PRIMARY is NOT ranked, the top 4 advance to the ranked part (November general) even if an candidate got 50%, it’s still top 4.
Murk, Kelly T, and the strongest rat/lib (likely this one) are locks to place in the top 3, the only question should be who is gonna be the 4th. It would be helpful for us it’s someone from the right who’s voters 2nd choice would be Kelly T. Libertarian?
Whoever comes in 4th in the primary will surely also place 4th in November, after which point their votes are redistributed, it’s at that juncture we need Murk to be in third.
There is no reason on that top 4 ballot to rank the rat ahead of Murk. All that would do is risk a rat win if somehow Kelly T ends up 3rd.
Elvi Gray-Jackson ... her assignment is to finish 3rd in Nov and help Murk get re-elected.
Obvious that Murk is going to win
Yes. This is the one thing that worries me a bit about the RCV. People who get their information from blogs and social media and conspiracy websites aren’t going to understand how it works.
I absolutely could see people who think they are being clever and either rank Murk last or put the Democrat second out of spite think they are helping Kelly and they aren’t.
