States get go-ahead to build electric car charging stations

WASHINGTON (AP) — States are getting the go-ahead to build a nationwide network of electric vehicle charging stations that would place new or upgraded ones every 50 miles (80 kilometers) along interstate highways as part of the Biden administration’s plan to spur widespread adoption of the zero-emission cars.

The administration on Thursday announced the availability of $5 billion in federal money to states over five years under President Joe Biden’s infrastructure law, sketching out a vision of seamless climate-friendly car travel from coast to coast.

Under Transportation Department requirements, states must submit plans to the federal government and can begin construction by this fall if they focus first on highway routes, rather than neighborhoods and shopping centers, that can allow people to take their electric vehicles long distances. Each station would need to have at least four fast-charger ports, which enable drivers to fully recharge their vehicles in about an hour.

Many technical details are to be worked out, and the administration acknowledges it will take work to persuade drivers accustomed to gas-powered cars, particularly in rural areas. The money is far less than the $15 billion that Biden had envisioned to fulfill a campaign promise of 500,000 charging stations by 2030, and it make take substantial private investment to make the plan work.

which enable drivers to fully recharge their vehicles in about an hour.

Not for most EVs. Maybe 80-90%, but a full charge takes longer. Four per stop won't be enough if you compare to the number of cars refueling on a major Interstate like I-80 on Turnpikes at the rest stops in places like Ohio, if we get anywhere near the number of EVs being pushed for.

Hi.

“The connector will be gone in 24 hours.”

I’m guessing 48 hrs.

I wonder if any odds/action are offered in Vegas?

Point of order—

It would take 10 Tesla PowerWall batteries to completely charge the full size Tesla sedan if it was 80% empty.

It would require probably 75 - 100 400W solar panels to charge those 10 batteries ONCE, and take several hours to do so. So that solar powered charging station could fully charge 2, maybe three cars per day, presuming you are charging from the stored energy in the batteries AND also from panels in sunshine.

I am a solar advocate, have 10 kW of panels on my home, and a 10 kWh battery as part of the system. we also have and enjoy a plug-in hybrid (runs on gas after the battery is discharged). The residential solar system works great for its size, and it is sized to produce about 2/3 of our ANNUAL electricity consumption.

All this adds up to: electric vehicles use LOTS of electricity and people want them charged fast (like buying gas) ... so a solar powered filling station for EVs would be both huge and hugely expensive.

Just my 3 cents. (inflation)

“The connector will be gone in 24 hours.”

People should have connectors run from their car.

Automakers should have connectors run from their cars.

People are more likely to steal metal from a large entity than from a person.

The connector should retract and lock after the charging is complete. The connector should be unlocked for say two minutes after the car is turned off so the driver can connect it to the charger charge port easier.

“...where does he think the electricity for these stations come from??”

That will be easy. Simply divert electricity now used in homes to the charging stations and high-speed trains.

Citizen, do you really need to have access to electricity 24 hours a day? Of course not. You’ll do just fine on maybe 8 hours a day, three or four days a week. To discourage use we’ll also have to raise electric rates, but you and the planet will thank us.

I think the notion of replacing ICE vehicles with electrics is retarded, and the hidden costs are beyond massive without nuclear, but to each his own.

My question is, why would “the states”, or any state for that matter, need “permission” to build electricity dispersal stations?

Lower cost aluminum or steel cables could be used instead.

Indeed....or any local authority, or private enterprise, as many have already done in office parks.

Also, I imagine that the states will be on the hook for upkeep.

Also, I imagine that the states taxpayers will be on the hook for upkeep. As they will for the cost of the boondoggle in the first place. Your taxes at play.

“and where will they go??”

In parking lots from Homestead to Gainesville and beyond.

Recharge at Fort Pierce or Orlando or other intermediate point so you don’t join the 300,000 Obama voters at Ocala waiting to use Ocala’s 5,000 chargers.

Bring $20 bills and a long charging cable if you have to buy a charge off a residential homeowner along the way.

We are paying for this in increased taxes and higher prices for everything.

Within 1 year they will have been broken into and destroyed.

I was actually thinking of Japan and how they allocated electricity to power their railroads.

“copper wire”

The wire doesn’t have to be round.

It can be hexagonal, of a certain size, and coated a certain color.

Possession of such wire except by federal DOT license holders can be made a federal felony.
