US Gun Sales Collapsed Last Month
msn ^ | 10 feb 2022 | Douglas A. McIntyre

Gun violence has become a regular part of the news headlines this year. Murders in American cities spiked last year, particularly in large cities. Guns were involved in most of these. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there already have been 4,706 gun deaths across the country so far in 2022. Even with more strict gun ownership and purchasing laws, the difficult fact is that about 400 million guns are currently owned by private citizens, the police and the military. The chance that civilians who own guns will turn them into the government, no matter what the incentive, is small. Gun sales, using the NICS Firearms Background Check as a proxy, reached 38,876,673 last year. This was down slightly from the record set in 2020 of 39,695,315.

There are several theories about the sharp rise in gun sales over the past two years. Among them is the violence in American cities during protests. Another is the fear that people might have to protect their property during the pandemic, even if this is absurd.

That is WAY low. I’ve seen it stated that there are well over 100,000,000 guns in private citizens’ hands, and I think THAT is low.

“Think I remember that Texas has about 2.5 million people.”
I think you slipped a decimal there Tex. More like 29 million.

...It is like everything they write is crafted for maximum propaganda, it gets tiresome.

Not just tiresome - it's extremely irritating. The Democrat Party 'worker bee' who cobbled the article together devoted the FIRST FOUR PARAGRAPHS to bull sh!t propaganda, and didn't get to the actual subject (January sales) until paragraph five. Just like a Hitler or Stalin speech - spend the first half hour lying about your wonderful, successful new programs (which were really dismal failures), to set up your phony narrative about the few actual facts that will be mentioned...

My local gun stores (MASS) are full of ammo. I even found primers last month.

They are expensive—but there was nothing I could not find in abundant supply.

The folks around Burlington probably don’t buy a lot.

The folks in rural Vermont are using their grandpappy’s shotguns, .22s, and 30-30s. Real rural VT is akin to West Virginia.

I guess they could use those new-fangled AR things.

I think the number is closer to 300MM guns. That is why discussions about confiscation and reigning in gun sales is ludicrous.

There is no way on God’s Green Earth that they will ever find 20% of the guns in this country. And what cop would want to be the first guy through the door looking for them.

But try to make this argument of an anti-gun person. They simply don’t “get it.”

OK. off a factor of 10. Hee Hee

29,000,000 X 2.5 = 72,500,000 firearms.

Do you think it is more than that in private hands in TX?

We finally made a pact that before we buy another gun we sell a gun. Otherwise you end up with a collection. 😉

LOL!

That’s my take also. I may have to sell two though for every new one I want.

There was the usual slim to non existent inventory in the stores then suddenly about around towards the middle to end of last month availability and selection just exploded (no pun intended), led by piles of 5.56/.223. What would qualify as a glut of it. I was in a Cabela's last month when employees rolled up a freight cart piled with cases of Winchester 5.56 that came up to the height of my chest. Enough in that store and Academy Sports too to fight a small war. Will be interesting to see how long all that stays in stock.

Yipes - just a 4 box limit at the Academy Sports places in my locale. Along with a glut of 5.56/.223 there was an entire shelf devoted to .380 auto along with a lot of 9mm, even the whitebox 124gr NATO stuff. Be interesting as to how long all that sits around.

The last figure I saw that someone sat down and made a serious effort to crunch the numbers for came in at 475 million. May be a few variations to be found from others but there is general agreement that the trend is on the cusp of half a million. Welcome to the largest conventionally equipped army on planet earth, ladies and gentlemen.

Check out the Ruger LCP Max. Pocket pistol that holds 10 rounds and you can get a 12-round magazine that fits better in your hand.

Fact, since Nobamas time, a large sector of Americans have been arming up. There was briefly a reduction during Trump’s time but all the BLM and rioting occurred. Senile slobbering Joe has done better than Nobama in forcing America to arm up. Corrupted DOJ, FBI, .gov , etc has established the fact our government is now the people’s enemy. Everyone knows it, and there simply isn’t enough of “ them” to stomp out the calls for freedom.
