Disturbing footage showing a Chinese mother of eight chained by the neck to an outdoor shed has sent shockwaves through the country — and sparked backlash about its treatment of rural women.
The video, which was posted by a blogger on the Chinese version of TikTok called Douyin in late January, showed the woman wearing a metal collar outside of a filthy home in China’s rural Jiangsu province, according to the blog Whats On Weibo.
The mother, who is named Xiao Huamei, was seen wearing only wearing a sweater despite being filmed in the middle of winter in chilly Fengxian county. At one point in the video, the blogger gives her a coat. The metal collar around her neck is visible throughout the short video, and the mom is missing teeth.

No English translation of anything she or anyone else says, and no real explanation of the story. Just that she’s mentally ill and her kids chain her up when she’s unstable; and an indirect suggestion by someone outside the story that she had been ‘trafficked’.

I'm shocked.
NO, its not common to chain mentally ill people in sheds in China, not any more than its common for parents to lock their kids in closets here in the USA.
But YES there is a huge difference in the Urban china you see on TV (like on the Olympics) vs. the reality of living in rural China.
while incomes and wealth for all in China has risen a lot in 40 years, the difference between Urban and Rural is huge. Its what happens when socialist/woke/progressive government tries to centrally-plan a quasi-capitalist society and use debt and fiat money to fund it.
I read some years ago about mentally ill people in Africa being tethered to trees when ‘acting out’. In the absence of medications there is precious little else one can do. The metal collar in this instance does seem extreme, though.

If you watch even 30 mins of it from that point you cant come away from being beyond disgusted by what happens in china.
This was the US 150 years ago. Attics and basements for the mentally ill if they were not killed.
I’m not doubting that the story may be true, and I’m no friend of Red China. I just want more details.
To me, a story presented like this isn’t NEWS without more background and detail.
And in Seattle the mentally ill homeless are allowed to roam freely and attack people with baseball bats.
